  1. Look forward to advice,
    Bruce

  2. You can passthrough AC3 5.1 audio with mencoder and ffmpeg engines, from VOBs, MPGs, AVIs, and other supported formats.

  3. i give up...

i dunno how to encode a dvd-folder (video_ts) with mencoder or ffmpeg codec with passtrough 5.1.

as you can see down in the log-excerp, it did automatically switch to 2 channel sound.

i used mencoder (because it can crop the image and has more options)
    i used passtrough
    i used encode audio

    what am i doing wrong?

  4. This is a mencoder limitation, its muxer only supports 2 channels. ffmpeg has no such limitation but does not support VIDEO_TS input (you need VOB input).

  5. so there are 2 ways:

either i rip with mencoder, wich supports cropped image and video_ts
or i rip with ffmpeg, with 5.1

if i rip with ffmpeg i cannot rip a whole movie, but only every vob file seperatly...

    wicked situation... hehe

is there a way to rip video with mencoder in 1 step and
the aduio with ffmpeg in 1 step and mux it together later?

im just searchin for a convenient way to convert a dvd to divx with 5.1 sound without having to fumble around too much.

the goal is to have all my dvds available on tv over an eyehome (elgato) and watch them with sourround.

otherwise your frontend is just great!

(besides: 2 or 3 pass encoding only suggests bitrates for built in cd-sizes but not the custom input in megabytes i wish to achieve in the end)

    regards and tnx!

    luxi

  6. I don't have any problems using the mpeg4 [.avi] (mencoder) codec and passthrough audio codec...

Doesn't major mean that you can't encode 5.1 with mencoder, but you can passthrough 5.1 with mencoder?

Has it occurred to you that you can open that DVD Folder with MPEG Streamclip, choose to open all VOBs, then convert to one MPEG? That way, ffmpeg will have the complete movie as one MPEG. Or maybe go back and rip with YadeX or 0SEx, choosing to save as one VOB or streams, again giving ffmpeg one complete movie to work with. You're not being creative 8)

That's right. For ffmpeg codec processing, I extract a DVD to a single VOB using the program stream option in 0SEx.

  9. well...

many tnx for all your help!

those tools are great help indeed

to broaddd: what exactly do you select in settings to get such a result?

    1. select the vob file
    2. select mencoder mpeg4
    3. select passtrough
    4. select "encode audio" ?

because that was what i tried.. and as major writes... mencoder is not able to handle 5.1

not encoding nor passtrough.. at least here at my side

    so i'm allmost happy...

now i only need to be able to crop the image to get rid of the black bars at top and bottom... since i need mencoder that for, it doesnt help to have a single vob file as mentioned.

i will crawl through all those nice apps i just found thanks to your help...

anyway: is it that rare to encode dvds with 5.1 sound??? i mean.. g5's have optical out, elgato has... no problem to get the full dvd-advantage...

    regards luxi

  10. ok!

figured out everything and it works!

nice tools you gave me here

    but:

i get audio out of sync!

if i select passtrough or ac3 (5.1), the audio is out of sync...

the weird thing is: if i select normal stereo sound, sync is ok!

(source: vob file, encoding with ffmpeg)

anyone knows the solution to this problem?

    regards luxi
