  1. I was just looking into the wide range of software for making windows look like the mac desktop, and ports of mac apps to windows. If anyone knows of any of these, could you tell a little about them and posts links to them? Or if you have any other cool apps for windows.

I'll start, check out www.aquaxp.com for news about mac themes for windows.

No, that's just finally realizing that Windows is the MacOS

I looked into doing this as well but the problem is most all of it subtracts from your system resources so not really worthwile. The only one that I'd really want to add to mine would be Expose. That's actually a very handy feature.

Yeah, that's what I've been concerned with too when trying these apps out... once you get them loaded you don't have alot of resources left for usual functions. The one thing I do really like about OS X is the dock, IMO its much better than a "start menu", because you can easily access your most used apps. I guess I don't really have to simulate OS X, I configured my linux kicker kind of like the dock:

I guess I see the quickstart bar as my version of the dock in XP. However one neat feature of the OSX Dock is progress bars show up on the dock icon for a lot of apps. That would be handy when doing an encode or PS effect that takes awhile while working on something else to be able to see the progress of it at a glance. I've been thinking that it would be nice if perhaps the taskbar tab for programs in XP could fill from left to right with a translucent color to denote progress. If someone can find me something like that...

Do you have a link for that app?

I haven't heard of something like that for the windows taskbar, but it may be out there. Have you ever tried linux? You might be really impressed by the power of the KDE (or Gnome) desktops.

No, Linux doesn't have full versions of the latest Adobe software so it wouldn't do me any good.

Dunno which app you're referring to though. Quickstart bar? That's built in. The other feature is just sort of a wish.

You mean my windows desktop??? Its a little too late for that anyway since I use linux.... don't worry though.. I'm not ready to ditch windows yet- I still need it for SSMM and GFD (If only they would convert that to linux!!!!).
    yoda- post your screenshot!

Ever heard of The GIMP? Its open source and has alot of the same features as photoshop ( www.gimp.org )! You could also try it in wine... I believe the latest official version is 20041201, or you could get it from CVS. No guarantee that it would work (probably wouldn't).

Oh... I know what the Quickstart bar is... Its kind of like the dock. Windows has been kind of frustrating for me... the other day explorer ended task at least 10 times when I was on. Post a screenshot if you want.

Yeah... I could but I actually am running OS X Jaguar on windows right now... with pear pc (OS X emulator), so I don't really need a mac:

I just like the features of OS X, both the graphics and the structure, probably because its unix based.

PearPC... so you have a taste. But you still have not felt the firepower of my fully operational battle station (G5).

In some cases this is true. I've been right on the fence with Mac and Windows ever since OSX came out. They each have pros and cons (even without the gaming edge that PCs tend to have) and I would gladly use either. In fact I'm certain I could utilize one of each at home. I miss the dual G4 I had, my first SMP workstation

  18. Konfabulator... I have to admit that I've never used it but the general opinion of the net is that it is a resource hog... and BIG resource hog (whether for MacOX or Windows).

As for iCal, remember we have Outlook in the Windows world which despite all the negative comments, is still a pretty darn good PIM. And relatively cheap. Any Pocket PC comes with a full version of Outlook. If don't like Outlook, there are lots of other enterprise quality PIM and groupware applications out there too.

The new Mozilla calendar project (Sunbird) will be iCal-ish and will use the iCal data format. It is still in early beta but "watch this space".

    Regards.

I suggest you have a look at something like this.

Don't forget to buy a one-button mouse, heh!

Yeah... I have seen people who have a Microsoft Mouse on a Mac... that's just wrong! Thanks for the link BTW... I'll take a look at that. It is resource hog, but when I'm just surfing the web or something its fine. If I really want to get away from resource hogs I'll just fire up fluxbox in linux, you don't get much more basic than that!

The reason I mentioned one-button mice is that I used to work in a computer recycling place: Take old computers to bits, cannibalise, etc. We got tons of old Macs and they all had these rather snazzy one-buttoners with cords so stiff they could move the mouse all on their own.

I do remember the sublime moment when (after mentioning how Apple like to pride themselves on their 'innovative' styling) I danced around shouting 'Woo! Go, Apple, go!'.

I am alone in my own little world... Probably.
