  1. Ok so I have this foreign dvd, and the english subtitles will not appear when selected. I want to fix this as I dont speak cantonese

The subtitles appear ok when the dvd is played on my computer through windvd - but they do NOT appear when played through either of my dvd players.

So, in order to try and fix this... I ripped the vobs to my harddrive and I used dvd shrink to reauthor to make sure the english subpicture stream was automatically selected when played.
I burnt to disc and still no joy on my dvd players (worked ok on my pc again).

What can be done? Can IFOEdit fix this? If so how?

Hope someone can help, I still have this movie ripped to my HD via dvd decryptor.

Here's something you can try. Force them to show with PgcEdit (free):
Load you DVD in PgcEdit, find the movie PGC (the longest one), and insert a SetSTN command at the top of the pre-command area, selecting the right subtitle stream. Save and check that it works before you burn.

It's still strange that your PC can show them but not your settop box...

  3. Thanks for that.

I downloaded it and had a look, its a bit complicatay.
So I didnt know what to do - even after reading your guides. If you can help out Id appreciate it.

I did try it with IFOedit, I opened the IFO files and changed the english subs to be "forced", saved and burned.

    But that didnt work either

    OK, here's how:
    - open your DVD. in PgcEdit
    - In the "Option" menu make sure that the option "Automatically renumber GOTOs ..." is selected.
    - Look for the movie PGC (on the left panel). It will most likely be the one with the longest play time. If you're not sure, you can preview it by hitting the "`" key (the one below the Esc key).
    - Select the movie PGC by single clicking on it, check that the subtitles are indeed there, by right-clicking and choosing "Domain Stream Attributes". This should show you the subpicture streams in the movie. If there's none, and would be the problem (but since you can see them on your soft player I'm sure you'll have some).
    - Now go to the right panel, where you'll see the precommands and the post-commands (there are commands that are executed right before and after the video in the PGC plays).
    - Select the very top line (**** pre commands right click and select "Add after". This will insert a "NOP" command at the top of the precommand area.
    - Double-click this NOP command to edit it. This will pop a small panel where you can modify the command. Select the menu "By Type" submenu "Set" - "SPRM" and "Subpicture". This changes the NOP into a SetSTN
    - The SetSTN allows you to change the audio stream, the subs stream and the angle. In your case, you just want to adjust the subs stream. So select the "Sub picture" part of the dialog, click "Set To" and with the slider select which subpicture you want. Make sure "on" is selected! Click OK.
    - Now save the DVD (File menu) and burn on a DVD-RW to test on your standalone.

It's more complicated to describe than it is to do...
