  1. Thats what its got to ...Pulling my hair out...

    This my problem...

Have Tmpgenc 3xp I am trying to convert avi files(divx,Xvid etc) to mpeg 2 using the DVD pal setting in tmpg every time i try it freezes the whole pc to the point that I have to power down via the off button, now I have read through the skicky about tmpg and done most of the changes and even checked the avi's for bad frames and such. have even used mainconcept but does the same on that as well.

have also reinstalled tmpg and my whole os system from scratch, so far to no effect.... what the frag am i doing wrong... have used tmpg to convert many avi's in the past and this started about two weeks ago.

The system has been checked for viruses with norton internet 2005 and is clean so it can't be that.

If any one else has had this problem please let me know..

have added dxdiag text just in case.

    thanks if anyone can help.

You need to determine if it's the Program, your source file, Windows, or hardware.

Defrag your hard drive with http://www.dirms.com/ It's a command line defragger, and it's very good.

Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL, and look at the programs you have loaded. Look for ones that are high CPU utilization or memory usage. Kill them before you encode.

Download Spybot and clean off all the adware on your PC.

    But ultimately -

Sounds like your Processor is overheating. Blast the inside of your PC with some compressed air. Make sure the CPU fan is still spinning.
    Download AIDA32 from http://www.sofotex.com/cgi-bin/ls/page.cgi?page=download&link=9326

Click on the sensors choice and see if your system is running hot.

Are you getting a VFAPI error message?

Does the avi play in a media player? If so whats it fps/res/audio/codec etc (use GSPOT if unsure how to find this info) then post.

this seems obvious, but do you have enough hard drive space where you're outputting the file? This could cause a problem. Also what kind of file is it and what type of PC are you using?

There are many ways to measure success. You just have to find your own yardstick.

The Sensors Choice is a sub menu under the "Computer" choice on the left hand side of the program. Click the + next to the "Computer" heading for the submenu to be displayed.

BTW, the only system where I've NOT seen sensors showing up is in a Dell PC. Do you have one ?

Have you installed any new audio codecs lately? My comp used to do that when it *thought* it recognized the right codec for audio and then it would freeze when I tried to encode. Are you using a .wav of the audio? (I know it's a stupid question, but it's one of those silly overlooked things)

I developed similar problem. Tried to contact Pegasus tech support - they don't really have any. Eventually on my own found the problem to be a bad codec. Installing a newer clean codec solved that problem.

The problem I can't really solve is spending $129 or whatever it was for a buggy, unsupported program that doesn't work very well. If you don't have TMPGEnc 3exp, imho save your money for something better.

Thanks for the input wil start at the top..

Have re formatted and installed os and all programmes so shouldn't need to defrag hard drive but will be keeping an eye on the heat out put of my cpu could very well be the problem but nothing inside my system has changed and have encoded may avi's before the problem started...

Even the simple act of Formating and installing an OS will end up with a dirve needing a defraging. Hard to believe but just check it and you will see about half of it will be red.

  15. Had the same problem with any encoder. Had to lower the PC133 DIMM to PC100 because my crappy motherboard won't run stable with PC133 DIMM. 99% of the full freeze problems are related to CPU overheating, memory overheating, HD with bad blocks or mechanical malfunction or mobotherboard with severe stability issues.

Small app which will stress your Processor to the max. See if your PC freezes after 20 minutes or so. If it does, voila.

I would try a different encoder to see if it crashes as well. Also if it's possible, try to encode the file on a different computer but with the same encoder. This should narrow your problem down somewhat.

    Happy Holidays!

Might just have the problem solved...

Had to think back to when the problem started to occur and realised one thing...

We have just had our 2nd son.. you might think what the hell has that got do do with anything...

But the thing is this... We have bannished our smoking habits to just the office...where the PC resides.. so I decided to strip it down tonight, only to find the heat sink on top of my P4 was caked in dust and god knows what else... Cleaned the whole thing and put Pc back together

It is now running a whole 20-25 oC lower than normal so am going to give ereything another go... will let you know how it works out.

But thanks for all the input everyone has put in...
