    Hello,

Ok I know a little bit about movie theaters that have a digital screen.

I saw Star Wars Episode 2 on a digital screen and absolutely loved the quality.

I understand that it can be delivered by either a high denisty propeity physical disc or satellite.

My question is about the satellite delivery - won't it be suspectible to Solar flares???? That would totally suck if you planned to watch a movie, fork over the $8 or $10 and have the afternoon/evening set aside all to have nothing but static!!!

Or is this on a different frequency?? But the flare might still disrupt the transmitting satellite.

    Is this outdated information??????

the playback would not be off sat.. directly (not in the end as they want 4k+ resolution 10 or 16 bit per channel video (not that is really likely to happen anytime soon) - it is 2k resolution right now ...

the sat feeds to a central server - and the movie plays off the server .. it is a server client system, with a central theater server and playback only clients (for buffering, etc) at each screen .

the files are encrypted right into the projectors ..

the hard drive method palys off a normal raid drive settup (just like the sat method) , but are loaded by hand ... the hardware is not PC based though but sometimes is) - but a dedicated playback system (for each screen) , using wavelet compression .. or mpeg2 .. (and other types) ..

the whole D-Cinema thing is kinda messed up for a number of reasons ..

What do you mean?? I though money was the only thing holding back a full scale roll out of digital cinema????

    not just money

    1. projectionist unions (IATSE)
    2. money - yes
    3. formats (what 'Hollywood' wants is not really do-able for almost 10 years from now - but audiences really like even what can be done right now in terms of resolution and color, etc)
    4. distribution method they all agree on
    5. standardized playback method
    6. money
    7. unions
    8. producers

everyone has their hand out and in the pie ... and their own motives ...
