Heywould3,
I wish you luck with that job interview. And, if it doesn't pan out, you might luck out with another one. And, if your layoff becomes protracted, you might consider signing on with a few temp agencies that work with tech or engineering pros like you. There are a lot of smaller companies out there who "use" temp agencies to screen applicants whom they later approach with job offers.
Considering what's going on in today's economy, I'm just glad I have layoff protection (labor contracted). Of course, hehe, that doesn't protect people from being "fired."
I work graveyard. And every year, vacation time is awarded in January ... and I end up using it all up quite early (I don't take vacations, usually). My time is used up by signing a list of employees who will voluntarily go home early if work slacks off (I can't be "sent" home, again, due to contract protection). One night, I came in early and was signing the list when the swing-shift supervisor (a jerk) started taunting me for always signing it ... saying I'd regret it later on if I wanted time off but didn't have any left on the books. I replied, "In 2005, I'll probably have all my vacation time used up by the end of February. But, I'll still be going to a literary convention in September ... even if I've used up all my time ... and no supervisor will be able to stop me." He got a bit arrogant and asked, "What makes you think that?" I replied, "Because I retire in August."
