  1. Hi all. I've been a "student" here for a month or so and have now successfully completed a few DVD projects from my home movies (Sony mini DV). My process has been: WinDV (transfer), VDub or WMM 2 (edit - save as AVI); TMPGenc Plus or DIKO (Encode - DIKO for ones I want done quicker with less steps), Author, Burn. Of course, this is all just copied from advice here - and some experimenting.

I'm happy with the process as far as quality. I want to try a dirrerent editing software if there is a fairly cheap one you guys think will be better for my purposes. I don't do much fancy stuff, just cut out the crap, add some stills sometimes and add soundtrack to some. I really like the "timeline" like in WMM so I'd like to stick with that type of user interface if I can. Any suggestions ?

  3. Thanks, bro, but those cost way more than I think I need to spend for fairly simple editing.

Take a look at Edit Studio from PureMotion. It has both a timeline and storyboard mode.

Play with their demo. Once you explore it, you'll find it has a huge number of features (way too many for such an inexpensive program). Also, they have wonderful support from the developers and community on their discussion boards.

I'll second BJ_M. Not sure if the link he provides is the latest version. I bought it from this link http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=932&FeatureID=7786.

I really like the NLE and I have been able to frameserve to and from it with no problems.

The built-in MPEG2 encoding (Mainconcept) is not very flexible in terms of setting options (i.e. you can't specify bitrates, etc), but you can use other encoders by frameserving the output. Also, the DVD Architect Studio only supports full D1, but is otherwise it's easy to use.

  9. thanks for the ideas. I'll take a look at the 2 mentioned. I checked on ebay and it looks like I can get them for $40 or so. These may be the last version so I'll check to make sure.

I've tried a variety of different programs to edit video ripped from DVD-R discs I've recorded. So far the only editing program I've truly been impressed with is Womble MPEG VIDEO WIZARD. It is very fast, and fairly simple to use. I'm genuinely impressed with the results, especially since MPEG video really isn't the best format for editing. You might want to check it out if you don't find something better suited for your needs. They offer a 30 day free trial on their software. I hope Womble is working on DVD Authoring Software.

Which frameserver were you able to frameserve to it with? I can frameserve out of it using the debugmode frameserver but I haven't been able to VDub frameserve to it.

    Hi tmh,

Picked from here (Advanced Video Editors in the "Tools" section, sorted by cheapest first)...

    1. Wax 2 - Sounds good. Freeware.
    2. Zwei-stein - Sounds interesting. Freeware.
    3. AviTricks - Sounds good. Freeware.
    4. Video Edit Magic - Sounds like it might suit. US$70
    5. Adobe Premiere Elements - Could be good starting point if you want to go on to the full monty Adobe Premiere (or similar) at a later date. US$100
    6. Ulead Videostudio - A friend uses it. Might suit you. US$100

    There's a few for starters...
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.
