I recently purchased an ATI AIW 9800 Pro, so I'm trying to learn the ins/outs of the card. I used the PVR option to record a TV show to my hard drive, then used Nero v.6 to make a DVD of what I recorded. When Nero converted the MPEG2 to VOB, I checked the quality of the VOB's and the video is extremely choppy. What would cause this and what can I do to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

I am not familiar with the AIW 9800 Pro but the first think I would do is author with something other than Nero.
I would also have to ask, did you watch the video before encoding it with Nero? If you did I assume the video was OK before, just came out choppy after Nero encoded it?
I know many people use Nero to encode, I personally do not, but it has been my experience in the computer world, you go with the companies who are experts in that field. Nero is a burning software company, not a video software company. Much like Microsoft and their Movie Maker failures.
There are several free tools available in the tools section of this site and even more at www.doom9.net
The problem could be several things clear down to how big and how fragmented your HD is. -

But seriously ...
Too true IMO. Dedicated tools for dedicated tasks give you optinos and flexibility. In short, Nero has a tendency to "do things for you" in an attempt to be helpful, often without your knowledge, and unfortunately, it's results at times leave a lot to be desired.
As northcat mentioned, test the output from your card before you throw it into Nero. If playback is good, try authoring it with something like TMPGEnc DVD Author (fully-functional free 30 day trial) and then try playing back the files it creates on your hard drive. If the problems still remain, then it might be your media. If in doubt, Google it. -
Thanks for the fast replys guys, the playback before it went to Nero was flawless. I did use Ulead after I posted and it came out without any problems. I'll look at some of the other authoring tools you guys mentioned, you learn new things everyday. Again, thanks guys

Happy to help.
Ulead's products are very good if you are just wanting simple DVD authoring without getting too complicated.
I would suggest Ulead's DVD Workshop over Movie Factory. DVD Workshop has many more options, is easier to customize and all that. I used DVDWS for years before I moved to TMPGenc DVD Author. I'm going to give DVD-Lab another whirl since I had to rebuild my system from the ground up. -
You can also try TMPGEnc DVD Author. I capture off of the TV with the ATI Software then use TMPGEnc DVD Author to create the DVD's. I feel it's a really good tool and it has a free trial.

You need to check out LordSmurf's website which has a lot of information on how to capture using an ATI AIW
http://www.digitalfaq.com/
Like other people have said you need to use a real DVD Authoring program instead of NERO.
Many choices for you in that regard but I suggust TMPGEnc DVD Author for ease-of-use and the fact that it is not overly expensive.
You can do some simple cut editing with TMGPEnc DVD Author (such as cutting out chunks of the video like TV commercials) but you are restricted to editing on the MPEG-2 "I" frames. You only get an "I" in an MPEG-2 stream about once per 15 frames. This means you can edit accurate within about .5 seconds. As you can imagine you will sometimes end up with snippits of TV commercials or else may have to "cut into" the main prgram to completely remove any traces of commercials. If you want to edit at ANY frame point (not just "I" frames) then you will need MPEG-VCR which can do this and then output with no re-encoding (although I understand it might have to do a re-encode at edit points that are not on "I" frames but that ain't no big deal).
Last but not least there is a separate AC-3 plug-in for TMPGEnc DVD Author. This will convert the audio you input into the authoring software to AC-3 format ... if it is not already AC-3 format. This is important since the ATI AIW cards capture only MP2 audio when doing a MPEG video capture. Make sure you set the bitrate for the MP2 audio as high as you can in your capture to get quality coversion to AC-3 audio later on.
