  1. I would like som experts on this forum to help me out here...

To completely author a DVD from a VHS tape I have to do
    these steps.

    1. Record the clip at DVD setting 6Mbits (I use Pinnacle PCTV Deluxe).

    2. Cut the clip from unwanted material with MPEG-VCR.

    3. Unfortunately I can't author the clip right away because I would
surely get out-of-sync issues so now I have to DEMUX the clip
because there most oftenly are dropped frames, for this I use
PVAStrumento (or is it the MPEG-VCR that creates the oos ?).

    4. If I load the .mpv file in ReJig it will show a bitrate that is almost
anything else but 6000000, so I can correct that problem here,
this must surely be a MPEG-VCR issue.
(If I don't fix this, my stand alone DVD player might not play the movie)

    5. Author the clip in TMPGAuthor using the .mpa file and the corrected
.mpv file. (It will MUX the to files into VOB format)

    And the question is,
is there really no way to skip step 3 or at least step 4 ?

  2. I'm afraid that I am unfamiliar with your proposed method of capturing. I can suggest a guide which I followed when I embarked upon the same project you have. Here's the link:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/89899.php

It should also yield higher quality since you can encode it to MPEG-2 later on and take your time about it. This also means you can fit more on a DVD - 6Mbps is quite wasteful sometimes.

    Hope this helps,

Unfortunately the PCTV Deluxe doesn't allow capturing in any other
    format than MPEG1 and 2....
Really my problems are that one single VHS tape is quite cumbersome
    to produce...
It seems that I'm just gonna have to settle...

  4. Hi,

I initially had similar problems (major out of sync issues when capturing VHS directly into my card).

When reading around this forum I picked up one of the hints which said that out of sync problems would be gone once you capture through your digital video camera. As I was still on Hi8 I next got a digital video camera which has both video in and the ability for passthrough. No more out of sync issues and I can capture in MPEG at any bitrate my program allows me to set.

By the way: I also use a "video switchbox" (basically a device to hook up multiple inputs to one TV Scart connection) which has a nice button labeled "stablilizer". This makes for a much more stable image when capturing!

My capture program is Pinnacle Studio 9, but I think the key is the passthrough I am using.

    Hope this helps,

    Frank

Hello henrygreijer. So is the captured video out of sync before you edit the clip? If not I would think you could open the file in VirtualDubMod edit out the unwanted parts, then save as dv-avi or raw-avi if you have the room, then re encode to Mpeg2 with TMPGEnc. Unfortunately there is a loss of quality every time you encode, but the fact that you can only capture to Mpeg leaves you with little choices. I have done this but only on smaller clips 15min or less, so there may be issues that I am unaware of when dealing with longer clips.

    Yes and no...
The clip is out of sync already after capturing unedited but this is
not visible until I have authored it, so obviously there are dropped
    frames from the capturing.

However, if I follow the procedure in steps 1 though 5 I'll get a
    perfect result.
But it is a very cumbersome procedure...

Are you capturing at 720x480/576 or 352x480/576. If you are capturing at 720 try lowering your resolution to 352 and see if that helps the dropped frames issue. Also use PVAStrumento before cutting anything. Mpeg-vcr is great for editing mpegs and has never caused sync issues for me.
