The term engineer and achitect are heavily overused. An electrician is not an engineer neither is anyone who works on computer programing an engineer or an architect.

    By definition:

Engineering: a science by which the properties of matter and sources of energy are made useful to man in structures, machines and products.

Architecture: The art and science of planning and building structures and buildings.

Neither of these have to do with computer programing really thougg computer programing helps.

I did my time in school and at work to get an engineering licence and it really bothers me to hear the term used so frivolously. My girlfriend went to school for 5 years for architecture getting a BS and a BA in it and refuses to call herself an Architect until she finishes her licensing requirements.

You do not call some one with a biology degree a Doctor or even someone who has a law degree a lawyer till they pass their Bar. The same is true with engineering and architecture.

your definition of "engineering" exactly fits computer programing where you are manipulating the properties of electrons for an useful benefit to man

True but, I am not a programmer and I do not want to be.

My job as a network engineer would be to take things like what Cap makes and incorporate them into a computer network.

@ipgpe13: Your definition of Engineer could be applied to almost any field. And because of this most anyone can call themselves an engineer.

This is where the title of Professional Engineer comes in, only a person registered in their respective professional body may call themselves by that title.

I don't get too worked up with the overuse of the Engineer title - only when it is missrepresented to imply professional.

    Mods, please lock this thread.

I am feeling worse and worse about my own thread.
