Hi, can anyone tell me the best software for changing the framesize of an AVI - if possible without losing too much off the sides would like to make it full screen

Use a software player that can zooooom, like zoom player.
If you want to reconvert use virtualdub, add the resize filter. Make it 4:3(width/height = 1.333333) if you want it full screen, you must crop the borders if it is a widescreen movie. -
Virtualdub would be my recommendation too.
It *sounds like* you have a widescreen clip and would like to make it full screen which means that you're gonna lose a bit off the sides no matter what method you use in order to not "squash" the footage horizontally.If in doubt, Google it.
