    Hi there,

I burned two DVDs using Traxdata DL media, and both appear to be fine in my Benq DVD writer, however my Toshiba SD-330E will not play any of the second layer. As one of the DVDs is episodic, it doesn't actually make much difference, (only the extras are on layer 2 it seems) but I have a few queries with this.

The discs were burned as DVDROM booktype, and I am resigned to believing that the fault lies with the lack of support for Toshiba DVD player (that said, all book type DVD+Rs do play.)

Could the problem be down to the media? Haven't heard good things about Traxdata since buying it. Or is the fault due to Nero 6. Got the latest version and the burn went fine (with verification). Any ideas?

The basic consensus right now is that Dual-Layer is still "iffy", both in terms of burning program support AND compatibility clear across the board. That'll likely change once the media is more widespread.

It could probably be both. Ritek DL media is not good and Nero is known to have compatibility problems with DL burning.

Buy Verbatim/Mitsubishi or Ricoh DL media and use a different burning software like DVD decrypter.

I think that Nero seems to be okay in this case as the DVD play fine in the burner for both layers. Since the DVDs were episodic, i cannot be sure what would have happened if I had burned a full length movie.

When verbatim drops in price a little (UK) I'll order a couple. Right now, £5 a disc is too much...

I should also add that the disc were ripped with Decrypter and I made sure that "remove layer break" was enabled.

Mine was an OEM from I/O Magic. Those came with a beige faceplate, with a separate black plate to replace it!

Ummm....now I find that the discs i have burned work with a Pioneer DV-350! Dammit. I cannot believe that my trusty Toshiba has been outdone!

Therer is some pixelation aroudn the layer change tough, I think...but that is interesting, no?

  11. Well it might still play a good DL disc (not Ritek) written with a good DL burning software (not Nero).

Check here to see an indication of how bad Ritek's DL media is (sure the tester was stupid and used a writer without support for bitsetting and hence doesn't even get a very good compatibility with Mitsubishi's DL media but it still played in about two times as many players as Ritek's DL media).
Edit: I now noticed that he used Nero to burn so that's likely another reason for the poor result.

Check here or here for just two of all examples of reports of Nero DL problems (but where for example DVD decrypter works fine).
