  1. Hello all, I have searched the forums on this particular topic and could not find anything about it. All I found was how to burn it to a mpeg2. I want to convert my avi file to a mpeg2 (dvd) file just to watch on my computer. I don't care how much room it takes up just want the best possible qaulity after the coversion. Are there s/w proggys out there that do this, I have seen a few but seems as though they don't do what they are suppose to. Any suggestions? thanks

    Hello,

You can do it with tmpgenc. It creates a mpeg2 file you can leave on your computer without burning.

Though tmpgenc doesn't always like ALL AVI files.

There are other tools in the tools section to the left <------

    Hi
I would suggest you try Mainconcept MPEG Encoder if all you're gonna do is watch it on your PC. Why? Because it is a damn sight quicker than TMPGenc.
However, TMPGEnc is quite possibly one of the BEST encoders out there for the money and well worth having. Great if you're going from avi to MP2 then to DVD and ultimately to disc. True it doesnt open all avi files but generally tweaking 'Enviromental Settings' and VFAPI Plug-in/Direct Show Reader seems to help alot.

What I need to ask is, why even encode to Mp2 if all you're gonna do is watch on PC anyway? Why not just watch the avi file?

If you just want to watch it on your computer....
You don't care how much room it takes up.....
and you want the highest quality.....

    leave it as is.

    Any conversion will degrade quality.

I use TMPGenc Plus 2.5 to convert AVI to MPEG-2 but I do that to burn the video to DVD.

Then the question is "Why?". To watch the video on your computer, converting to mpeg2 (or anything else) won't add anything - just degrade.

  6. I guess I stated my question wrong. I wanted to know how to covert a avi file of an "avi quality" to "dvd quality" i.e if its a analog avi file how can I digitalize it to get it to the quality (clearity) of a dvd. thanks

    Sorry about that mistake.

    thanks

    Hello,

    You can't.

You can't upcode it and make it look better. Anytime you mess with video there will be some quality loss.

Your best bet is to either "buy the dvd" or reencode it from the original source at a higher bitrate for better quality .

    Kevin

EDIT - Actually your AVI file IS DIGITAL. You probably mean it's from an ANALOG capture card. That will have a limitation. It will look good but you have to capture at a very high bitrate to make it look as good as your wanting.

  8. I was recommended a free program called bbMPEG to convert avi to mpeg2 in another thread. I tried it and it works fine. But in most other threads where someone asks for a recommendation for an avi to mpeg2 app, no one ever mentions the free bbMPEG.

Can i assume that the reason no one seems to recommend bbMPEG is because it's encodes are lousy? Heck, it's a free app so if thats not the case i would think it would be mentioned more. Is it just junk or what?

I didn't think there were any mpeg2 encoders that were free because of licensing. Isn't that why tmpgenc plus in not free?

  10. Yea, i read that too. I don't know how it's free. Maybe if it's a one time licence fee and whoever made it asked for donations to pay for the licence. In any case, it is free and i just wanna know if the encode quality is definatly good enough for my VHS transfers to SVCD or if i'd lose a noticable amount and would therefore me much better off paying for a better one.

QuEnc is free too, and pretty good - At least I can't see anu differece between QuEnc and let's say MainConcept, that I often use.
