I have attempted this with VirtualDub 1.6 - it seems not to be able to get past a problem with a stats file (or a .pass file) which it needs to access after the 1st pass, so as to feed that data into the 2nd pass. I have tried several remedies - such as calling this bitrate curve statistics file .statsfile, or even .pass or, as some have suggested ./pass!!! Getting nowhere ... have used all the How To tutorials to be found on Videohelp.com (i.e. this site ...)

I am capturing from a Canopus ADVC 100 (type 1 DV) and using what is given as type 1 compliant VirtualDub v. 1.6, Win XP, 2.4GHz P4, 1Gb mem, 149Gb HDD

try .\video.pass (I think you have to set this up for each pass if you're using 2 or more passes).
    If in doubt, Google it.

Sadly, it does not work, and I am so looking forward to making XviD from my Canopus ADVC 100 DV type 1 files! Am I explaining myself wrongly?

I don't think so - after all, I was able to understand exactly what you meant

It's something simple, and unfortunately, it's gotta be something you haven't quite got set-up right

    Maybe this:

    might help ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. There are many tools to convert DV Type 1 to Type 2. I recommend using WinDV (http://windv.mourek.cz/download/WinDV-1.2.3.zip) to capture your DV AVI as Type 2, then all your problems are solved.

There's no explicit need to use Type 2 is there ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  7. If you don't need a specific file size try using single pass with target quantizer. That way you pick the quality you want and and every frame has that quality but you don't know exactly how big the final file will be. The results are about as good as 2 pass (at the same file size) but with only one pass.

Type 1 DV AVI files have a single video stream with multiplexed DV audio. A type 2 file has a second copy of that DV audio as an standard AVI audio stream. I know VirtualDub can read the video from both types but I'm not sure it can handle the audio from type 1.

<edit> I just checked -- VirtualDub cannot read the audio from a type 1 DV AVI file. </edit>

    Don't you mean Type 1 ?
    If in doubt, Google it.
