  1. Like I said, do what you want to bypass the firewall and stuff. If they have a half way smart net admin, they'll be able to track everything you do. To make it worse, you are trying to bypass their security which in most cases will raise a red flag.

    Believe me!

I think you'll find that your firewall was working in conjunction with your old proxy server to block those sites. Naturally, now that you're not using the default proxy server, the restrctions won't be in place. If the admins were smart, they'd have locked down any traffic using port 80 that isn't from the company proxy server, but I guess they're not that tight, which is why your new proxy server is working.

Stiltman's right too - any inward or outward traffic can be viewed in the firewall logs so long as they've got logging set up. This tells them the host IP, the destination IP, the port used .... it don't take much investigation to translate an IP into a www address and similarly to then track the source IP back to your PC.

If they want to, or have their equipment set up "properly", you're *still* fucked
    If in doubt, Google it.

Maybe he should restrict his surfing for now to the company website, so there's some plausible deniability - "honest, I couldn't get to the company website so I tried another avenue".

Do that for a while and see if it's noticed. If not, then slowly venture out to other sites, stay away from pr0n sites and see what happens.

My old job claimed they tracked every site you went to - turns out to be a ruse. I went all over the net, and never had a problem. However, this would depend on how anal the company is about stopping you from doing what you want to do.

That's why I never set up a proxy at work. It would be a guilty act in and of itself. Imagine trying to explain myself to the computer security folks:

CS Investigator: So, Capmaster, I see that you've been using a proxy to surf the web while at work. You are aware of our zero tolerance policy regarding prOn, aren't you?

Capmaster: Yes. And I don't download prOn at work ...only at home.

CS Investigator: Then why do you need a proxy?

Capmaster: I occasionally visit a video help site ...you know, for information that could assist me in a video project I'm planning for the radar I'm in charge of.

CS Investigator: Hahaha. Shyaaaa!! Those monkeys are beginning to protrude from my buttocks ...I can feel them. Clean out your desk Mr. Capmaster ....by the end of the day ...and I'll take your badge right now.
