  1. I think i figured it out. I used the wrong executable. Seems there's 2 of them. The audio didn't work because of the format. Have to change it to 44.1 in the avi first. But one question i do have is, what can i use to play .mp2 files? Media player doesn't work. Do i need a special type of player, or is it just that media player is the exception?

I have a radeon 9800 pro, so i'm thinking in terms of compatability and performance. I keep hearing you all reffering to the 8x8 chip or whatever and how it's rather low quality at capturing video. So what about this ATI? Is it a lot better ? Price ain't that much more.
You don't want that. Just get the Avermedia DVD EZMaker PCI capture card. It has a chipset that is slightly better than the BT chipset (I say slightly better because I don't think the BT chipset is bad at all).

  3. I can open *.mp2 in media player version 9 and media player classic. I prefer media player classic.

Not sure why you can't play mp2 files? Maybe its a version number or operating system version issue??
See if the mp2 will open in your authoring program.

If you want to try the other 2 programs, avisynth is actually quite simple especially if you are just using it for frameserving. The only line in your script would be:

    avisource("yourcapturefile.avi")

save this in notepad with the extension avs and then open with one of the other 2 programs. Just be sure to download and install avisynth first.
The beggining of this guide shows how to set up and use avisynth if you want to know more about it.

  4. Nope......won't open in the autoring prog either, but then it doesn't accept mp2, it only creates it. So i have to choose "all files" to try and load it. It also won't open in virtual dub.

By the way, this isn't my computer....i'm at work and just messing with this stuff to see how it works. My home PC is almost state of the art while this one is a celeron 2.4 with 256 mb. Both have XP pro.
I wanna say it's because the codec isn't installed, but doesn't it need to be if the authoring prog uses it? Or could it do this using the codec within the app itself w/o it being installed on the system? (dumb noob question ) Oh, and i also use media player classic. I'd try the newer one, but every time i do it associates itself with all files and a bug in XP makes it a pain to re-associate classc.

If it doesn't work at home i'll try avisynth

And John....i'll stick with the avermedia.

  5. I figured it out. The audio problem was what was causing the player to say it's an unsupported format. It now plays.

However, problem not solved.....it saves with the extention *.mpg and when i check it with a app i have to identify the codec used, it shows mpeg 1 (VCD). I thought this thing was supposed to save as mpeg2 ?

  6. Click on:
    Start Encoding

at the next window click on
    Settings

Click on "Video Stream Settings" tab
Edit - changing "Program stream Settings" tab changes both.

Under Video type set to MPEG-2 or DVD.
Also set up your other settings for bitrate, size, ect.

Might want to look up a guide for this because I have never used it, so not sure how good my feedback is.
