Hi
I have tried to rip two diffferent dvds with mac the ripper but on each occasion it failed to rip the disc ( an error message came up after a few seconds , and only some of the files are creted in the folder it creates ).
I have folllowed all instructions such as setting a region if clear does not appear etc but still cant understand why it doesn't work , it has ripped a disc for me previously.
I am running a 17"powerbook with panther
Anyone have this trouble or any tips
thanks

Try to make an image disc of this DVD using the new YadeX v.0.99b.
It could work.

Are you trying to rip DVDs from other regions? What message do you get? It might be scratched or dirty. Try cleaning DVDs before you rip them, wiping from the center outwards.

The dvds are from diferent regions, and I am pretty sure the discs are clean as the movies are new.
thanks for replys will try yade when i can -
What type of rip are you doing with MTR?
Full Disc or Movie Only?
There have been several threads reported on
various movie studios releases that are problematic.
do a search for Sony, Fox, universal, Aliens, Predator,
Garfield, Van Helsing, Bourne, Supremacy."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

The problem is that you're trying to rip DVDs from other regions on a Matshita UJ-815, 816 or 825 DVD-RW drive. They aren't able to do that with the default firmware. If you have the 815 or 816 drive, you can install RPC1 (region-free) firmware, which will allow you to rip DVDs from other regions than the one the drive is set to. If you have the 825 drive, you'll need to use a different drive or computer to rip DVDs from other regions, as there is no RPC1 firmware available for it yet. If you don't have another computer handy, the easiest option is to get an external FireWire DVD drive.

Thanks for the help, has anyone got a recommendation for a good external burner that is region free ( or capable of being region free ) are the lacie d2 drives region free?
thanks -
MTR will work on them even if you don't install region-free firmware. It's just those Matshita DVD-RW drives that have problems with discs from other regions. I believe Lacie drives typically contain Pioneer mechanisms, on which you can install RPC1 (region-free) firmware if you desire (which will also give you improved ripping speeds). You can also buy a standard IDE DVD-RW drive and a FireWire enclosure, and it's usually cheaper than buying the Lacie external drives. Enclosures typically run about $40, and a good Pioneer 108 16x dual-layer burner will go for about $80-90.
