    So you wanted 342MB's?
Probably the codec just got saturated. Use a higher quality matrix, a higher resolution, etc.

the file was actually 131mb. is there a site that explains how to achieve specific sizes, or is it all guesswork?

Only really two situations where XviD won't hit a desired filesize.
    1) Undersized due to the codec becoming saturated. i.e. max quality and it can't throw any more bits at it. As I said use a higher resolution, better quality matrix (larger size for the same quant), etc.

    2) Oversized. Second pass larger than the first and the default overflow settings cause too many quant 1's to be encoded resulting in a too larger filesize.

Now your situation could lead to either. However it resulted in situation 1 which suggests that you probably have quant's capped at 2? What is the average quant by the way?

I only did 1-pass, when I did 2-pass after finding help it came out pretty close to the target size....here's the page: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/xvid_setup.html

Well as I said with a 2 pass encode if the 2nd pass is larger than the first it will insert quant 1's to try and hit the desired size. Not sure what happens with 1 pass, but if you want accurate file size prediction with decent quality then you should always go with 2 passes.
