Might sound like a dumb question....or maybe an OT Question...I'll let the mods decide that. Anyway....What was the very first computer program that allowed you to copy the contents of a DVD to your hard drive? I'm guessing it was NOTHING like we have today.

Jon Johanssen (sp?) invented DeCss in the mid-late '90s - the very first CSS encryption stripper/DVD rip app. He also got a lot of legal grief including jail time for his trouble

DvdJohn was eventually aquitted twice.

aaaaah, DVD Jon. Yep, DeCSS was the first.

It's actually not unlike a few of the older programs we still see today, particularly smartripper, claddvd, etc etc.

That's as I understand it too. He fucked up when he released it on the internet though.

I thought he had spent some time in jail but zook says he was acquitted. Maybe the jail time was just because of a large bail until the trial

there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand,
and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
bench. And everything was fine, we was smoking cigarettes and all kinds of
things, until the Sargeant came over, had some paper in his hand, held it
