    Hi
How do you change your IP address ? I have SBC DSL & am running through a linksys cable/dsl router.
I have 3 pc's running through the router and every pc says the same IP address.
I have reset my router & have shut down my modem and turned it back on but this dod not change my ip address ?
I think my IP was banned because i can log into an account from a friends pc but i can't from any of my pc's and neither can my son to his account through his PC which is running through the same modem which makes his connection the same ip address.....

    Thanks

I'm pretty sure that you aren't able to do that. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think that can only be done through your ISP.

I know that with dialup the Ip is frequently dynamic, but I believe the IP is static on broadband and is somehow loaded in the cable modem firmware via a handshake with the ISP. It's a guess on my part, but it seems to make sense.

All ip's are dynamic unless you pay for a static one.

There is a shortage of IP addresses so dynamic addresses are used.

Some of the ways around this shortage are variable length subnet masking, network address translation, and last but not least IPV6.

If you were not behind a router, you would do iprelease/iprenew.

The router acts as a dynamic host configuration protocol server and usually uses network address translation.

The router will assign addresses and because of NAT, the computers do not use a public IP. They use private.

You are probably seeing the private addresses.

  8. That's weird because I also have SBC DSL and have 3 PCs running and they all have the same IP address BUT every time I restart I get a different IP address.

I have a 2Wire 1800 Gateway which is a combo ADSL modem and router w/4-port ethernet. Not sure whether that would make a difference, though.

Each computer will use a number like 192.168.1.3

The router will usually be a number like 192.168.1.1

Each computer then uses a different number startting with 192.168.1.2 and then so on.

If you want a different public address then reset your modem and you will have a different public address.

    Nope

There are 3 ranges of private addresses and many people can use them because they are private.

    Private IP Address Ranges
Class From To CIDR Mask Decimal Mask
    Class "A" or 24 Bit 10.0.0.0 10.255.255.255 /8 255.0.0.0
    Class "B" or 20 Bit 172.16.0.0 172.31.255.255 /12 or /16 255.240.0.0 or 255.255.0.0
    Class "C" or 16 Bit 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.255 /16 or /24 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0

You've got 1842 posts from the same IP address bazooka. Do you pay extra for yours?

The public address is leased for a certain amout of time.

If you are not using your connection after awhile, that address goes back into the ip pool.

In answer to your question cap, No.

I am always using my connection so my number never has time to change.

Usually servers are the only ones with static ip's because you have to be able to find them.

This is the nature of networking.

I deal with numbers all the time.

Thanks zook. Ya learn something new every day

I asked because I also have many many posts from the same IP and I don't recall seeing the charge on my bill. It's probably because the thing doesn't have enough idle time to reassign it

Yes, thanks! So, what's going on with Noahtuck, then? His public IP should change after a reset unless he was assigned (and paid for) a static IP, right? Also, if what he is seeing is a private address (and his public address has really changed), then why can't he log into the site to which he referred?

He may need to clean out his cache and cookies.

Every time the modem resets, he should get a different ip.

If you go into the command prompt, and type in ipconfig /all, you will see the private address of the actual computer.

To see your public address, I suggest a site such as www.whatismyip.com

That will give you the public address.

    Okay,
Thanks for the ton of post's!!!!!!!!
I shut it off for about an hour and when i started it back up i had a new ip address,
when i shut it off earlier it was only for a minute and i had the same one when i turned it back on so i must not have had the modem shut off long enough.
Now everything seems to be okay

Plus i found that you can go into the modem and reset and change stuff like the router, never knew that before about the modem :P

I knew as long as there was power to my modem (at least that's what i always heard) That my IP would not change and i also never shut it off, just my pc's, but when i tried and it did'nt change i thought CRAP!!!
    But all is good now

    Thanks Guys!!

Now I understand why ours seems static. Thanks Bazooka

We have a LAN server PC at home that also serves as the firewall and gateway for the internet. The cable modem is connected to it via an ethernet card, and the machine is always on. That explains why the IP stays the same.

I've had to use ipconfig occasionally to release and reattach, but not so much since switching from the crap RCA modem to the good Motorola Surf Board modem

Because the IP numbers are dynamic and do change, this is how the music industry has mistakenly nailed wrong people such as a grandmother that had a mac and could not even run kazaa.

There was another case where they accused this guy of downloading(which is really uploading, although the industry is retarded and cannot understand computers)latin music. The guy did not understand spanish and hated latin music.
