  1. before i get started, I do not want to have this thread locked like this other one that I had been following:

So, please, no rantings and all of that. I am wanting this post to be informative....

I have a emachine 1.2 gig (then running XP SP1) with the rebaged A05 (DVR-105) 4 speed -R burner in it. This burner had extensive use and worked GREAT for about a year. I upgraded to SP2 and after a number (<30 burns) the burner just died. I cracked it open and saw a screw sitting in it and assumed (actually began following the thread above) my burner had died of natural causes.

This gave me a reason to go out at the black friday sale and pick up the OfficeMax burner. I began using it in another computer for a bit and it worked great (after the firmware update). After moving back to Texas one of the first things I did was unpack the PC and jack the burner in (it IS a sickness). Darned thing would NOT work at all (drive wouldnt eject, nothing). I tried all of the "usual" things and nothing worked. I uninstalled SP2 and it immediately began working on the next reboot.

What I am trying to say is that in the event your burner goes "bad" and you have recently installed SP2 on your machine, you may want to just uninstall (which is computers 101 anyway) SP2 and see if that works. Thankfully, I am a packrat and kept the burner. When I get unpacked, I plan to install it into another PC and see if it can be brought back to life. All in all, it wasnt too bad since I was wanting another burner anyway and the missus couldnt really say anything.

Has anyone else had a similar experience. Hopefully, this will keep some folks from tossing out a potentially good burner (unless you need an excuse to get a new one

Keeping this to just "the facts", my NEC 1300A would not burn some specific media after the SP2 update. Although, I should go back and see if it will burn some media it refused to before the update.

  3. I had to uninstall SP2 after some problems, especially when encoding

I think the burning was fine, forgot

That is probably a wise thing to do.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
