I personally captured a tv show into mpg format following guidelines of a vcd, so I open it up in VirtualDub and i go to edit out the commercials and such, i do it using the mark in button and then mark out button to get a section and then i delete. so i do that til im done and then encode to divx format...but when its all done i play the file and the audio is TOTALLY messed up!! does my editing out the commercials only do the video and not the audio, leaving it behind?
how can i fix this/do it right, if not in vdub then in what program so i can save in mpg and then convert to divx
thanks

Under Options make sure that Sync to audio is checked. Under Audio...Interleaving make sure that it is enabled.
Also, by messed up do you mean the quality or is it completely out of sync with the video?
AVI IO is another good program to capture video with the added benefit that it acts as a TV/VCR. Just look it up under any search engine.

the audio is completely out of synch with the video
the sync to audio & interleaving were both checked, btw, in the interleaving theres a setting defualted at "preload 500 ms before video starts"
could this have something to do with it? -
Sorry I didn't read your post more carefully. You caputed in MPEG? You'd be better off using the MPEG Tools in TMPEG or something similar. If you want to use VirtualDub and the audio is still out of sync then I'd suggest toying around with the Dalay Audio Track settins until you can bring it into sync. The 500ms preload is pretty much standard with most capture programs but it woudln't hurt to play with these numbers either.

u know of any guides on editing out parts in the middle of a mpg file in tmpeg? cuz ive figured out how to cut into 2 files and cut off the start/end etc... but not sure how to take out a section of the video file
anyone know how/what program that most rippers use when releasing tv-rips (i.e. anivcd, vulcan, fe, etc...) to edit out the commercials? -
OK, say you have a mpeg file of a TV show.
Use the Merge & Cut tool in tmpgenc and bring in the mpeg file, then set the edit points at the beginning and end of the first segment of the video, chopping off the pre-show commercials and ending at the beginning of the first commercial break.
Then add the same file again, but this time set the edit points so it starts at the beginning of the 2nd segment of the show, and ending at the beginning of the next commercial break, and so on for all the segments of the show.
If you are making a VCD, make sure to set the type to MPEG-1 Video-CD.
Then set the output file and click run.

hold the shift key while working the slider in VirtualDub. that will lock you in on the keyframes, you will know for sure because the letter B is displayed next to the time in the status bar. you MUST edit on keyframes or you FUBAR the audio.
simple as that just make sure to hold down the shift key and all should be fine. -
If you are dealing with captured MPEGS and not .AVIs I HIGHLY suggest getting MYFLIX or IFILM EDIT. They do a great job of editing the commercials out and, after a bit of a learning curve, they are easy to use.

to dumwaldo...i tried the hold shift to get to the key frame intervals, but it still did not work (i had tried this before) and btw, when u hit shift it notes the key frames as I not B
so is that what u mean, or should i REALLY just do the editing where it says B and not the key frame intervals -
Socko
i am very sorry, you are correct it is frames marked by the letter I not the letter B.
sorry i should have checked instead of just running my mouth(or fingers as the case may be)
the next thing i would suggest is to try some other audio compression settings in VirtualDub as the audio compression may not be compatible with your source. here is a for instance...
i used to use DivX audio in converted VCD's. when i selected the compression rate if i did not select one of the choices that said "for DivX" at the end it would screw up the audio in an assortment of ways. try using different settings and see if it helps.
BTW my suggested settings would be MPEG Layer 3 @ 128 kBit/s - 44.100 Hz. Stero (14 Kb/s)
hope it helps
peace out,
dumwaldo
