Use VirtualDub MP3 freeze to scan for bad frames.
In my experience, at least 9 out of 10 downloaded AVIs (P2P) have errors of some kind. The kind of applications you use works under perfect conditions - throw something unexpected at them, and they die. With the risc of sounding "elitistic", try some AVI to DVD guides found here, like those using TMPGEnc, quenc or CCE for more predictable (and higher quality) results.
