I want to capture a still image from an Mpeg file I have, are there any freeware programs or Windows XP programs that will do this for me? I am running windows XP, and want to save the still as a picture file. A friend of mine suggested using the Printscreen button, then saving to paint or something, regardless it didn't work. Thanks!

Works for me, although there are better ways. Open the video. Hit pause. Hit print screen. Open Paint. Go to Edit and hit paste. You should see your picture.

  3. You have to turn the video card hardware acceleration off. Also, VirtualDubMOD opens mpg files I beleive.

Printscreen will not capture MPEGs running in windows, IMSC. It'll only show a blacked out area where the video is running. Correct me if I'm wrong here

The PowerDVD suggestion is your best bet.

    Turn off video acceleration :
To do this in Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, do the following:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
    2. In the Video acceleration area, move the slider to turn off video acceleration.

Then you can use the prtscn-button to capture screenshots from video in windows media player.

One way to do it is to convert it to a .AVI file then play the .AVI file and do a print screen.

    Ctrl+I in Windows Media Player.

Screenshot option in "non-crippled" versions of WinDVD and PowerDVD (but only for MPG).

    BSplayer screenshot option.
