  1. Ok, here's the situation. I have an NEC 3500 DVD writer, a DVD-Rom and a CD+RW drive. I've only just ordered the NEC DVD writer, so I'm not 100% sure it'd be my best bet to use it for CD burning or not. That's why I am here. I have 2 bays and I would like your advice on which 2 to use. I do alot of CD(more CD) and DVD burning as well. I've heard that it's best to use the DVD-Rom to rip and the writer to burn. Would it be safe to go ahead and take out the CD drive and just use the DVD-Rom and the NEC as my two drives? Does the NEC burn CD's reliably? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I wasn't sure wether to post this here or in the DVD writers section. Please forgive me, if it is in the wrong section. I figured it for a general topic, not directly the DVD writer.

  2. I have a Pioneer CDRW/DVD ROM drive and a NEC3500 in my desktop and prefer to use the CD RW drive for burning CDs and use the NEC for ripping DVDs

You should be fine going with the DVD writer and the DVD-ROM.

And this forum is fine since your topic includes a non-DVD writer too

  4. I concur. Use either 1 or 2 drives as you see fit. The NEC is a very good drive and very capable at writing CDr as well.

Some people are worried that using a DVD writer to both read and write CDr and DVDr will diminish its life span. I have been using my DVD writer to write to all medias (more than 500 discs) and the laser is still going strong.

  5. I have 2 Hard drives and 2 Optical drives (dvd-rom & DVD-rw). You are going to run into problems burning discs, you'll have a lot of coasters. Ised to have a CD-RW and no it's not used becuase of coasters. DVD-RW's and CD-RW's are notorious for high fail rates when used as a slave vs. master on the IDE cable.

    Meaning you have:
    IDE 1
    Hard drive: windows (MAster)
    CD-RW: to burn COASTERS (Slave)
    IDE 2
    DVD-RW: Burn DVD's (MAster)
    DVD-Rom: Rip (Slave)

    or

    Hard drive: windows (MAster)
    DVD-Rom: Rip (Slave)
    IDE 2
    DVD-RW: Burn DVD coasters (MAster)
    CD-RW: to burn CD (Slave)

I have an NEC-1300A and burn 1 disc almost everyday. 90% of the time I burn CD-R's. I got the burner X-mas 2002. I just flashed the firmware last night and it works fine. If you really want both you'll need an IDE controller card (PCI) and the use it that way

Just my .02¢ spend it as you wish
