I recently upgraded to the world of 802.11g wireless networking and I was thinking of stripping my old IBM 300gl (PII 400 Mhz) down to the bare minimum and making into a fileserver. Since I want to put in the closet (out of the way) I really don't want to have a monitor attached to it... for that part... anything... mouse, keyboard... whatever. Is it possible to do this and just monitor and make changes to the file server through remote desktop from my other PC?

    Thanks...

Hmmmm... Should work... bios should have settings to skip keyboard test. (would error on boot if not)

Then you can use remote desktop, PC Anywhere or other remote tools to view machine and make edits.

    Go for it.

  3. try a small Linux distro
I'm pretty sure FreeSCO could be used as a file server. I know it doesn't have to have a monitor/key/mouse as I used it as a router (it main function)

  4. Google for VNC that will allow you to access the system from any other pc... Its FREEWARE and there are a few diff versions all doing the same thing. Dont need keyboard, mouse etc connected to boot PC. I use it to run a rip and burn set up.
