I am definitely a newbee at this. Purchasing a Canopus advc 100 to transfer tapes to DVD. Is the canopus all that I will need, or do I also need a specified capture card inside the PC? I was under the asumption that the Canopus hooked between the deck and the computer and that the HD buffered the video or it went directly to the DVD burner. As you see, direction is needed. Thanks guys.

That's all you'll need to capture. It'll convert your VHS material to DV, or Digital Video.
To get it to DVD, you will need to encode and author the files.
I suggest you start reading here. You need to learn exactly what capturing, editing and authoring are. Take the time to read through the pertinent material:
