    I agree with you glockjs.
I can't believe some of the stupid ass comments I have read in this thread so far. The winner's gotta be "the difference between John Lennon and Dimebag, is that Lennon wrote good music"....Obviously someone who has never followed his career and knows nothing about him.

Is "the shooter" ever NOT an ex-marine? Please no offense to the rightfully proud members of the USMC. But seriously, this reminds me of Full Metal Jacket:

    "Do you know where those
men learned to shoot like that?"
    "Private Joker."
    "In the Marines sir?"
"In the Marines. Outstanding! Now those
people did not put their Marine training to a good
purpose but they showed what a Marina with his
rifle can do, and before I am through you will all
be able to do the same thing."

I haven't listened to much Metal since Randy Rhoads died. I often wondered who Dimebag Darrel was though. I saw guitars endorsed by him in Musicians Friend catalogs but never knew who he was.

He was an innovator to the speed metal genre just like guys like Hendrix, Richards, Rhoades or Van Halen were to theirs. He inspired me a great deal and will be missed.

I met Randy once. Even took a guitar lesson off of him (though in a group of people)...but I was FRONT ROW CENTER. I got to play him cream colored Les Paul too. They had a Marshall half-stack and a Sholtz Power Soak set up for him at that seminar...DAMN that was nice. He was truly amazing to watch from that distance....or lack of distance I should say.
I still have his autograph in a frame back home.
He was a little teeny guy...and had alot of "stage fright" in that small place. He said on a big stage he's not so bad since you really only see the first 5 rows...

  15. Has anyone seen the latest edition of Metal Hammer (British Mag) ? It features an interview with Phil Anselmo, who talks about Dimebag in very derogatory terms. I've not seen the magazine in question yet but I have been told that Phil is on the cover holding two knives, one of which shows the reflection of Dimebag. I shall be going out lunchtime to see if I can track down a copy.

  17. What you can't see from that scan is right above the F in F*cking are the words "Dimebag deserves to be beaten severely".

The article also quotes Anselmo as saying "I suggest no-one do me wrong. Things don't go well for them and I lift not a finger."

I've always dug Pantera.... Couldn't stand to even look at Phil though. He's probably just pissed that Pantera broke up and his prospects for a money making gig to support his drug habit dried up.

Seems unlikely as he's the one who left the band.

I totally agree. I just hope that no one is out there thinking there was some sort of conspiracy cooked up by Phil to have Dimebag killed (I imagine someone is probably already all over that angle) I realize Phil had his problems with Dimebag, but I severely doubt he ever wished this upon him.

Too bad Phil STILL hasn't made any kind of public statement about this. With every metal musician and his mother posting condolences, it is pretty messed up that Phil is nowhere to be found.

regardless of what bad blood there was between them, I'm sure he's still trying to get his head around it.

there's a difference between the generic "he was a great guy when we played together in Peoria, he'll be missed" by acquaintences, and the reactions of someone who was an actual bandmember for many years.

I'm not surprised at all he hasn't made public comment yet - has there been any from Rex, or Vinnie Paul? give the guy a break.

Hmmm... I guess you're right. I hope he makes a quality statement given the time then.

He will...when the time is right.
Even though there was a feud between them, I'm sure Phil feels deeply sorry for this.

  27. This latest incident, along with last year's deadly club fire in RI underscore the need to crack down on smaller clubs before more people are hurt or killed. It would be nice if the artists would demand better security and safety, but it will probably require legislation to really pull it off.

When we used to perform in San Francisco my biggest concern was people throwing things. Fortunately, this never happened once, which is extraordinary considering SF crowds. It was standard practice to throw things during punk shows in the early 80's. I was very angry when Siousie and the Banshees walked off the stage during a show in '80-81 (back when they were still good - in my opinion). By the time we were playing in clubs throwing stuff had become "passé", much to my relief.....

I don't see a real need for legislation. Pretty much any (Indoor at least) venue is a private establishment. They have the right to search people at the door when they're admitted. Acts and promoters need to step up and say 'if your security isn't up to snuff we won't book here,'...simple.

Sorry for the hijack but on the issue of throwing things, I went to a Green Day concert right around that time that everyone seemed to be throwing their shoes at the bands. Billy Joe got hit by one in the face and he stopped the song. He asked the crowd to point out the guy who did it. Then he said something to the effect of, "when I start playing again, you all beat the shit out of that guy until the song is over." So that's what happened. They hauled the guy out on a stretcher and suprisingly, I never heard anything about it in the news.

As for Dimebag Darrel, I think I've seen him mentioned in every Guitar magazine I've ever read. He was a real guitar icon and he actually had some incredibly melotic chops for the type of music he played. I wasn't so much a fan of Pantera as I was his style as a musician. And if you look at the column he had (I forget exactly which mag it was) he was a very well rounded player. I remember trying to learn chickin pickin from him. The guy is definitely a legend and he did influence my playing to some degree.

  30. I just heard on TV about Dimebag's killer, whose mother stated he had paranoid schizophrenia and that he had a medical discharge from the USMC for that reason. He also believed that he'd written Pantera's songs himself. If this is true then the guy was obviously deeply disturbed.

Unfortunately, until clubs start doing a better job with security, there will continue to be a risk for this sort of thing to happen.....
