    got this message in my BIOS/CMOS by S.M.A.R.T. Detection that my HD is about to crash and i need to back up my files...
    i already back up my files and it's been almost a month now that the message is always appearing everytime i start my PC and yet my HD did not yet crash....i don't have yet time to format or replace my HD and reinstall XP and all my applications....

    how can i remove that message so it will not appear anymore, it's in the cmos/bios startup, just after my bios/cmos detected my HDs. i got to press F1 everytime so my PC will continue loading my OS, its annoying me....

  2. You can turn SMART off in BIOS. This is normally accessed by pressing delete when the machine has just been turned on.

    I urge you to swap that drive. If SMART is saying that it has had it, you must not rely on it. You could lose a lot of data, and it could be even more inconvenient for you when it does go down.

    The option is usually in the advanced setup tab in the bios.

  6. I urge you to determine the drives brand and then go to their website and download their diagnostics disk(s)

    IE www.wdc.com for western digtal, www.seagate.com for seagate, www.maxtor.com for maxtor and look under support for diaganostics/utilities or check their rma section that usually has links too.

    One other possibilty if Win95/98 some joker could have edited autoexec.bat as
    @echo off
    echo (s.m.a.r.t.) error message, I don't recall exactly what it should say IOW.

    But more likely the drive has detected that it has errors and is reporting them to you.

    Another thing to check if XP go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, and see if the drive shows as "Healthy" or "At Risk".

    The drive can show as At Risk and still work for an indeterminate length of time before going 10 toes up AKA Dead. Easier to copy a drive while it still works than to have to start from scratch installing windows, drivers, programs etc.

    Good Luck and let us know here how it goes.

    Cheers
