Check the comments area. Someone posted some concerns about the benefits of the latest firmware.

  3. Hmmmm.

I have not upgraded to '1109' yet, but I'm sure that the problem that DereX888 is having, is related to Contrast and Brightness.

I noticed that when I changed firmware from '409' to '531', that I had to change my contrast and brightness settings. '531' seemed darker than '409'. I think that the '1109' firmware may change it back to normal contrast/brightness settings.

Contrast and brightness set too high would definately cause the problem that DereX888 has shown in the picture that he's posted.

  4. I was just about to try to upgrade the firmware on my 642. I have been having some issues with it but I don't know that this firmware will solve them. #1, the damn thing turns itself on at random moments and starts playing...(it is possible that one of my other remotes that I use is interfering...) #2 the goddamn subtitles sometimes come on automatically. Never the same movie...#3, just found that when there is an angle the little angle changer icon pops up. I can't find a way to turn this off. Also, if when the icon is up you skip a track, the icon will remain indefinitely...

I'm going to try to upgrade and if it doesn't solve any of this, it's goin back.

  8. The firmware upgrade went smoothly and there does not seem to be a PQ difference between 531 and 1109.

I stick to my original assumption that that the problem that DereX888 is having, is related to Contrast and Brightness, and not to the firmware.

  12. No, that's option when file is encoded to Divx/Xvid Needs more power from your DVD player and is NOT standard vhen using Dr.Divx since it is not required for Divx certification.

Contrast and brightness were at their default "Normal" setting when both pictures were taken.
Normally I have it set to "personal" settings, where I add a bit of contrast and lower down brightness slightly (to further minimize artifacts appearing on mpeg4 or svcd/vcd).

This new firmware was probably optimized for newest divx (at the time of writing it), because this problem is not as visible on divx5.x files as it is on xvid-encoded files. Best to notice it are the edges of some sharp contrast details, like the station logo I have shown. Perfectly shaped letter "S" in the logo was displayed with original firmware, while suddenly it got artifact bits and pieces around its edges with new firmware. Contrast or brightness has nothing to do with it.

I suggest to buy this player from a retailer with "no questions ask" return or exchange policy, because there is no way to return to original firmware once you upgrade it.

    GMC, Q-PEL
no, it does NOT support it. I know, its strange - this machine has ESS Vibratto II chipset, which normally does support GMC and Q-Pel (IIRC i have it in my other player) but for some reason it doesnt work on this machine

Autostarting problems - as someone mentioned it above. My father have same player too, it pick ups signal from his other remote too (Toshiba player) and autostarts if there is a disc inside. Funny thing is that you can turn it on with Toshiba remote from far away, while with its own remote it wont work from half of this distance

Well, we can discuss its shortfalls for long, but IMO for $50 (or less) player its not worth to waste time

    EDIT:
I forgot to mention one EXTRA OPTION which is undocumented anywhere: this player plays some ASF/WMV files too! I haven't figured out what are the "proper' encoding settings for WMV to be played on this since i despise this dreadful format, but I was pleased to notice it nonetheless
I was checking my old CD-RW full of good old short porn clips from the web, and among other I had there few asf and wmv file. To my surprise playback was very nice, even aspect ratio was kept proportional on one of them I remember WMP on my PC used to always squeeze it to "very widescreen" screen, while it is 4x3 fullscreen
However other asf & wmv files didn't play at all.
Player just went back to disc menu and message "CODEC. NOT SUPPORTED" appeared on the top.

well, your source of info is incomplete
It does GMC and Q-Pel, so do other players by rjtech...
    Look here:
    http://www.rjtech.net/detail.php?model=rj1500dvxii

    EDIT:
seems like they removed this page
But you can see description of basically same model only in non-karaoke version:
    http://www.rjtech.net/detail.php?model=rj800dvx

"...features with the latest improvement in format support compatible with GMC, QPEL, and PCM audio. Other great features include VGA output, progressive scan, region free, and... "
(it was basically exactly the same text on infopage for 1500dvx before they removed it, as it is on infopage for 800dvx)

The new firmware is fine. 1109 does not introduce any jaggies on any XVID file. I compared xvids before and after the upgrade and there is not one iota of difference.

I have read numerous forums regarding the 642 and the 1109 upgrade, and the only one who's had 'jaggies' problems is DereX888. Other people have said there's no difference and others have complained about the macrovision, but there's just one member who's talked about problems with jaggies on xvids...

  22. RJ-1500DVXII does NOT support QPel, because ESS Vibrato II chip does not support it.
RJ-800 DOES suppot QPEL because it's based on Mediatek chip

Why not? If Im incorrect then jump right away Nothing is more pissing than incorrect information, aka misinformation!!

I dont watch many avi files, to me its not a problem if player doesnt support it at all lol
I bought first dvp642 few months ago and i read here on this board someone's complaints about new firmware problems. Since i bought it from one of those retail chains where i could return or exchange it for no reason, so i had nothing to loose to try/check it out myself.
You can read my comment in the dvdplayers section. I dont say anywhere that the new firmware introduces lots of jagginess!
It does somehow distort tiny details on some of the xvid encoded files. It is visible on a rather large screens, like my pic was taken. You have to compare same freezeframe from same disc with old and new firmware. And obviously dont compare on a 30-40'' tv

RJ 1500dvx II plays qpel and gmc no sweat.
Take your own qpel/gmc disc to any store selling them, or to any of your friend who has it, see it for yourself.
I dont care what chip is inside, is it ESS or MediaTek - any info about it I posted here I have read and taken from websites I have posted earlier, most likely www.rjtech.net

Nero does accept the rom files. It should be a simple click and drag then hit burn. What kind of error are you getting?
