DVD-R / +R / -RW / +RW ?

Hi

i am new to dvd thingy.

what is the differences of dvd-r and +r ?

and -rw and +rw ?

why there is plus and minus sign ?

for my new bought pioneer 108 writer, which brand of media disc is suitable ?
most of the time if i write 4x, it gets error. if i write on 2x, its pass.



please advise.
