Okay, I am making some video files to keep on my hard drive for a bit of a giggle. Problem is that I want to keep the original aspect ratio without having any redundant black area in the resultant video, since this only makes an MPEG-1 file bigger. I've searched high and low, but cannot figure out for the life of me how to eliminate this. I am using FlaskMPEG to output an AVI file for TMPGEnc to encode.

In Tmpgenc go setting/advanced/clip frame filter.

Set video arrange method to full screen (keep aspect ratio 2).

Make sure the black areas are in fact part of the video. Widescreen when done properly uses the the entire resolution of the video and is then stretched or squished depending on how you look at it. The black areas are created by the DVD player or software. It's called anamorphic, look it up in the glossary to the left. Generally the only time where black part will be part of the video is when it was captured from a TV broadcast.

If it is part of the video you can take the suggestion above. Cropping video is usually a feature of higher end editors.

Coalman, there are people who are that inept on this board, I don't doubt that. I am not one of them.

Shadowmistress, thanks for the suggestion. I will go and try it now.

Okay, I've given up on removing the borders. I just want to find the settings that will give me a nice quality file to play with.

  5. I think shadowmistress had it backwards. What you want to do is use Clip Frame (Setting, Advanced) to remove the black borders, then set Size (Setting, Video) to match the new frame size. Size must be a multiple of 16 so you may have to leave a little black border or crop a little of the picture.

Yeah, I found that out during the encode.

Thanks for the help guys... it has made a real pain of a job much simpler.

    Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me....... :P

The reason I mentioned it is that I have seen similar questions where someone will go and explain something only to find out it's wrong because something that can sometimes be obvious isn't. Hope you know what I mean cause I'm not so sure I do.
