This will accomplish exactly and precisely nothing to fix this problem. There are some system problems that are best fixed by reinstalling Windows XP but this isn't one of them. The problem is due to an over protective Window's "feature" that was put in Windows to allow it to maximize the chance of retrieving data from a marginal or failing hard disc drive. If Windows gets six or more errors in a row from an IDE drive, it switches to PIO mode to improve the chance of reading from the drive (It's called - slow things down). Once Windows makes this exaulted decision, it decides that PIO is permanant on that IDE channel. If the user goes into Control Panel and sets the channel back to DMA mode, Windows in its infinite wisdom ignores the setting and remains in PIO mode.

The problem this causes for optical drives is that they are removable media drives. Unlike a hard disc where a read problem, once encoutered, is likely to stay that way, an optical drive isn't failing just because a disc is loaded that has excessive errors on it. The ONLY fix for this problem is to uninstall the IDE channel and reboot. Windows will plug and play the IDE channel upon reboot and DMA functionality is restored - until another error infested CD or DVD disc is loaded and read. The only two fixes for this problem are 1.) for Billy and his crew at Microsoft to remove this heavy-handed "feature" or 2.) uninstall The IDE channel that is affected and reboot.

here is a registry hack which FORCES XP to stay in UDMA mode 66.

You can also enable Ultra DMA 66 with a simple such trick

    Edit the key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000

and add a new DWORD value called EnableUDMA66 with a value of 1.

Or, here save this as a *.reg file and execute it

    ----
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000]
    "EnableUDMA66"=dword:00000001
    ----

Or follow this link and go 1/2 way down the page.

The page has some other good tips which may help.

  5. ok this is gunna sound werid but i need the orignal xp ide drivers anyone know where to get them at?

the nvidia drivers i think are causing me the problem, they allow me to use any ide mode, the problem is only pio mode works all the others freeze my computer and in event viewer i get thsi error

The Protected Storage service terminated with service-specific error 193 (0xC1).

so anyways i tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and it won't install the mircosoft ones, it says driver not intended for this platform.

i tried looking on xp cd but no luck

  7. now i have a bunch of them 000x files which is very odd, before when i had nvidia ide's i only had 3 or 4.

3 of them folders are for the primary ide, 3 are for secondary, 1 for controller, lol and one of them is blank. something is very screwy.

i tried deleting the checksums in them folders and that hasn't helped im going to proceed to putting the dword "EnableUDMA66" = 1 into all of the primary ide folders, i tried it in the 0000 or controller folder and it didn't do anything.
