Okay.. this one just floors me.
I posted earlier about picking up a LiteOn 5007 from Sears.
I took the original back and got a 2nd unit.
The second unit had the same problem that I took the 1st back for.
The drive spun so loud during the first 15-20 minutes of the DVD
(recording And playback) that it was annoying. not just a spinup, but
actual minor vibrations causing a loud sound on whatever surface we
put the unit on.
I read in other posts today about Memorex and other cheap DVDs
(like CompUSA) discs not being reccommended by LiteOn Techs.
These were the 2 discs that I had been using!
I decided, before returning the 2nd unit to acutally try the disc that was shipped with the unit.
To my surprise, the recorder was much more quiet with this DVD+RW
that was packed w/the unit.
And get this....
Now the Memorex DVD+RWs that I had been using are not causing the loud 'humming' noise any more!
My original problem was not a 'sometime' problem... it was an 'everytime' problem... Since I used the Disk that came with the unit, all the DVDs I tried have spun more quietly!
Do I chalk this up as 'a fluke'... where I should expect it to get loud again
sometime in the future? (I've already had it and have been using it alot for 4 weeks... today was the first time it was quiet)
I just dont get it!!!!!

Welcome to the world of iLO and Liteon! It's like being cast in the movie "Something Stupid This Way Comes." I feel a fool almost every day that I got suckered into this brand, but the price and features knocked every bit of common sense out of my brain.
Now you know why Ty Pennington uses a bullhorn on the ABC Sears show 'Extreme Home Makeover'. He must have the same unit and it made him deaf.
Seriously, I've had computer drives that made a huge noise but only at times. I'm not sure what burner deck it uses, but my iLO HD04 uses the LiteOn 411, I think. -
Okay.. I think the 'big guy' upstairs is messin with me....
I just ran the Firmware update that was needed for these
machines (got it in the mail... CRITICAL UPDATE for this model...)
Guess what.. Ran it per the instructions, and
I fried the unit now and it doesnt power up...
HELLO is all I get!
LiteOn Support told me to return it....
Aaarrgh... I don't think this is meant to be.... -
You now have the following data point in your catalog of personal experiences:
"Lite-On Blows"
....and that one will stay with you for a loooong time, I'll bet -
I own the Liteon 5101 and I had my mix thoughs, but after updating the firmware and do a factory restore to default as made a huge major difference.
I say if you buy any Liteon DVD Recorders when you setup the channels go in and hit the RESTORE TO DEFAULT and turn it off and turn it back on again. Do another auto channel scan. Look on the Liteonamericas.com web site for firmware updates for your model.
Prefer blank media: Maxell DVD+RW and DVD+R. I use the same ones from the PC DVDRW to HOME DVDRW, no problems.Best Regards,

Okay.. took the dead LITEON back and went to wallyworld
and got an Emerson ERW10D4 unit.
at first glance.. (couldnt find any -RW discs.. I should have some tomorrow)
the setup was easy, looks to have more useful features than the cheap LITEON 5007 did...
(Can create VR disc OR a video compatable disc, plus it almost looks like you can actually EDIT out frames if using a VR -RW disc! I normally do this on the PC, but would be real sweet if this actually works right on the DVD Recorder!)
The LITEON only created VR discs (when dealing with the +RWs)
and from what I understand... its not common to find frame editing features on units without HardDrives? -

As for the dvd drive, a new poster in the recorder review section claims to have swapped out his Ilo unit for a 4x Liteon

"O.K. when I got this DVD recorder it would not see the memorex 8x that walmart sells. They just would not work at all. But just to see whats in the box I opened it up an inside was a plane ol dvd burner with no case around it. As I have 2 lite on it 4x dvd burners in my computer I just had to see if they would work if I ever had to replace the one in the ilo, they work very well in fact better than the one that was in it, now it will use the dvd's that it would not use before."
My advice, quit pissing around with the HDD unit and go with the straight burner. Fewer problems.
I spoke to Ilo tech support today on new firmware ( they promised updated firmware that "lowers" the macrovision sensitivity 2 weeks ago) they would not give me a definite date on a firmware release.
Maybe if every owner called in and threatened to return the product the release could be faster. -
I have updated my ILO Firmware Page to include the DVDR04. It now has the new firmware update for the 04 that is suppose to relax the Macrovision sensing.
-
Please visit my ILO DVDR04/HD04 Firmware site for the latest firmware upgrades for the DVDR04 recorder.
The site includes the latest firmware for the DVDR04, 1097, hacked to include LP 3-hour mode and disable MacroVision.
