Wondered what everybody's favorite rock videos. I'd say the best that comes to mind at the moment for me is Shame by Stabbing Westward. Another really good one that comes to mind is Just by Radiohead.

Considering that the format of music video now sucks completely (not that MTV videos were ever that great), this would be a good time for me reflect back with some memories.

(Don't shoot me for this one):
"Take on me" by A-ha. I just liked the imaginative use of animation on that video, it was unusual for its time.

I also liked the unedited version of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes - the one with the worms that was edited out later.

Best unseen video (this one's for Rookie64):
"Stand Back" - Stevie Nicks. Not the "treadmill" one used on MTV back then that everyone has seen, but the 'Gone with the wind' themed one that has never been released. It was a full-blown theatrical production. Stevie spent a fortune on it (or rather, her record company did) but she 'nixed' it - no pun intended - because she said "I look too fat" in it. I got a good copy from someone years ago and people are shocked how different it is from anything else she's ever done. The one that was actually released to the public, shown on TV, was lame.

I wonder how many other artists have good videos that were never released for one reason or another?

I honestly haven't watched MTV in years, so I can only go by stuff from further back.

My favorites:

Rainbow - Can't Let You Go (parody of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with the most incredible babe I'd ever laid eyes on in a musiv video 8) )

Rosie Vela - Magic Smile (Rosie...another hottie)

The Sherbs - We Ride Tonight (for lighting and great camera work)

ZZ Top - Gimme All You Lovin' and Sharp Dressed Man
(cool concept, editing, entertaining and 1980 Playboy Playmate Jeana Tomasino appearing in all the ZZ Top videos)


Ellen Foley - What's A Matter Baby (for concept)

Pink Floyd - One Of These Days (for animation)

Southside Johnny - Trash It Up (for sexiest)

Ministry - Revenge (for editing and style)

Interesting, I hate it with a passion... and yes, I am a HUUUUGE Pink Floyd fan (though not a Roger (no-talent) Waters fan).

On that note, the best music video is without a doubt:

This movie is actually an hour+ long music video- the best music video EVER made. It is also a fantastic and deep film.

Yea...I didn't think she looked fat in the Civil War version...she actually looked worse in the one they released

I'd take Rosebud for Fleetwood Mac videos (for live perfomance)

Stevie looked better in the videos for Gypsy and If Anyone Falls IMO.

Of course, we're talking about a video that most people have never seen, but I suspect it may turn up someday on a video compilation. Also, the Edge of 17 vid and ummm...what was the other one? I already forgot, but I have E17 and another unreleased one on the same tape. See, it's been so long I can't remember what it is, even You probably know which one I'm talking about. Your memory is better than mine, it's been so long since I've been into it that I've forgotten a lot. That's what happens when you get old :P

I don't know too many people who say they like the 1990 Live In Berlin version - I guess I'm getting something more out of it. I especially like it for using The Berlin Wall as a metaphor and the optimism it ends with.
Also like certain performances.

Alan Parker's version is very dark...but I agree it's very deep.

A lot of people didn't get the meaning of The Wall - I think the film an live show add more depth.

Agreed 100% with how she looked at Cal Jam 2

Her weight has been up and down over the years - sometimes she looks good and others, bloated. Sometimes it's bad choice of clothes (those shoulder pads didn't help).


Trying to think of the other unreleased video - I know she's in Walter Egan's Blonde In The Blue T-Bird, but not sure if that's the one you're trying to recall.

Try ebay for Rock Video Monthly on VHS - they used to release most of the videos from the early to mid '90s


I have one with Radiohead included but it's the Stop Whispering video.

One of Prince's assistants said that he had as many as 80 fully produced music videos that have never been released for songs that have also never been released.

I guess he's keeping them for posterity.

Most of the other Twisted Sister music videos are also good. I also like the one where they are being chased by the Taste Police (something like that).
