  1. Hi all,

I just upgraded my DVD player to a Pioneer System. It plays movie DVD's fine, CD's fine, homemade CD's fine.

But it is not liking my Homemade DVD's. The DVD are -r and the player accepts -r. When I put the DVD in the menus come up fine, background music is there, and I can navigate the menus fine.

If I just start at the beginning it will play for a little while then the sound will skip or the video will hang for a second and start again. I sometimes get blocky video as well.

When I navigate back into the menus and select a chapter and start, I get the problem almost right away.

These DVD's work fine in my computer and on my older Samsung DVD/VHS player.

Any thoughts on what is causing this?

  2. Sorry I should add that I am using Vegas 5 and DVD Archeitect 1.0. I have been moving AVI to DVD and then burning with the Vegas 5 and DVD Archeitect 1.0 software. So I'm not taking it out to a seperate program.

Yup, different brand DVDr's play different on different players...find a DVDr that plays well on both.

Take a look at the DVD Players on the left <<<<<

  5. I'm using mostly Memorex 4x 4.7g disks and using MPEG2. I think I had some old Fuji media as well.

Any suggestions for media that works well on most DVD players. My old (less expensive ... figures) DVD player was pretty forgiving.

What format to prerecorded DVD's use? I've never seen one of those not be taken by a DVD player.

  7. Okay, I see the media idea page. But how do I know what my media ID is before I buy the disk? The Memorex has several potential media IDs some good and some bad.

I looked at the box that my discs came in and I don't see anything that looks like the names from the Media ID page. How do you know?

  8. Sorry, one more question. Let's assume that I have bad media and my new DVD just won't read it right. Is the data on the DVD corrupt? So if I copy the DVD back onto my hard drive and reburn it on good media, will it still not work - or is it the media itself that my DVD does not like?

The DVD works on the computer and my other DVD player. So I would seem like the content is still okay.

Check and make sure the power source to your DVD player is reliable, too. I have found that most stutters in playback can be attributed to power outlets that occasionally vary in output to the point where they provide about 40V less or more than they should. Most electronic equipment that does not have a transformer or a power regulator cannot cope with this.

  11. Thanks Lordsmurf for the info and link to the digital faq.

So turns out I have Prodisc Media - not bad but not great.

So if I had received really bad media I should just take it back for a refund and try another?

Is there a brand that most people would recommend as usually being in the top category to reduce the chance of having to return?

  12. Media made by Taiyo Yuden are the best you can get. The "made in Japan" Fujifilm discs are made by Taiyo and you can also buy the generic Taiyo media from www.rima.com. Just make sure you buy from a reputable vendor or you get some fake ones.

Another rule of thumb is to buy media that are made in Japan. They are almost always better. Check the pack or box to see where it's made.

You should check out www.cdfreaks.com for more info about media.

    TDK DVD-R (TDK/TTG)
Maxell "made in Japan" DVD-R (MXL, TY)
Fuji "made in Japan" DVD-R (TY)
    Verbatim DVD-R (MCC02RG20)

... or buy online (PRODISC, TY, MXL, etc)
... supermediastore, meritline, rima, few others.

  14. Okay,

Thanks all for your help. I've got it working fine on both DVD players now.

I went to COMPUSA and looked for media that was made in Japan. I only found one SKU there. It was a 10 pack of Sony dvd - r. Turned out to be TYG01! The 3 pack and 5 pack of the same dvd -r was made in Tiawan. As a matter of fact, everything else there was made in Tiawan. Looks like I'll be ordering on line from now on.

I used ISObuster (UDR) to get the files back on to my hard drive. Then I used nero 6 (latest version, I downloaded it today) to burn the DVD. I had stopped using nero many month ago because I kept getting a DVD - Video Files Reallocation Failed message. After reading about this issue on this board tonight I decided to just ignore the message (as suggested) and burn. No one seems to agree on the issue that causes the message (it appears to be farily common although no mention of it on the Ahead website FAQs) but most people agreed that you could ignore it.

So the combination of using better media and going back to nero to burn seems to have corrected my problem. I also notice that my menus are a lot smoother now and respond first time when I navigate (they were always a little sticky in the past).

    Thanks again,

    Glenn
