Would running a dual amd 1g machine be faster than running a single cpu machine using the new 1600xp chip, I am going to upgrade this weekend and would like an honest answer to this. The upgrade would cost about the same.

  2. Running a single fast Athlon 1600XP will help in all programs. Dual Athlon 1GB CPU's will only help in programs that support it, and I don't even think it'll be as fast as the XP.

I'm planning on building myself a dual Athlon rig early next year, after the other AMD760MPX motherboards are out. I don't want the Tyan.

I was also sitting here thinking about cooling and power supplies, obviously these must be upgraded also, and I would think cooling could be a real problem.

  4. Valnar is right, dual 1ghz CPUs might be faster in TMPGEnc or Premiere, but in the vast majority of applications, the 1600XP will be faster.

As for cooling, just get an AMD-approved heatsink. I have a dual CPU setup, and neither processor ever gets very hot, even under full stress.

I'd worry of cooling, but for standard appz I don't think it'd help or hurt to be dual, but for encoding I know it really speeds it up (assuming your on Win2K or XP)
