Movies on the psp are on special, proprietary discs. meaning, if you wanna watch it on the psp, you gotta buy it, your dvd's, vcd's etc won't work on it.

I agree. Nintendo, IMO, seems to better in the traditional video game department. most of the others seem to make games out of existing things like sports & war. Sonic was fun on Sega, but Mario Bros. was always more fun to play. PS1 had a lot of Sports games, Nintendo had it's own creation of fighting games. When Nintendo made a sports game, it usually sold better than ones for other consoles. I like Car racing games, but I don't own any other than the Mario Cart race games. They're the most fun. I'm betting DS is going to be the better selling Handheld, though I think the PSP will do fairly well in the US too.

you notice how Nintendo is marketing the DS as "Nintendo DS" not "Gameboy DS"
interesting that -
I think they got tired of making the name longer. GB color. GB Advance. GBA SP. Now it's the NDS. Rather than NGBASPDS (w/stylus) which would be PFU.
-
I think gameboy will continue separately and the DS will be like a handheld slash PDA slash notepad that plays gameboy games.
-
It may. but I think the DS capability is one of the main attraction qualities for it and it's very reasonable priced to have DS. But it did come out not long after SP and they'd probably want to keep that console around for a bit longer.

Hello,
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nitro/
Interesting they're trying to make it so the new DS will play online! It says you need a wireless router and some other stuff.
Kevin
EDIT - I saw a new commercial that had movies that could play on the GBA???????? Cartridge movies???? Not much room in them I would guess...Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
ds is dead...they are discounting it already. PSP will be here next week. get ready to load movies and mp3s on memory sticks!
-
psp hasn't won that many people over yet. Sure, it will probably sell based on the fact that it's a sony, but the handheld market is pretty much maxed out and I don't see Sony's entrance as a huge gain for it.

Hello,
IF they let you buy blank discs for it THEN it will take the market by storm.... That properiaty stuff doesn't work too well for consumer tastes...
Though - you say it works on a memory stick????SWEET!!!

I feel the biggest problem on the handheld units seems to be cost. Even portable dvd players have had a hard time with prices above $200 in cost. any time they hit about $130-$150 in cost, they sell pretty well. I don't wanna pay more than $80-$100 myself for a new handheld system that includes a popular game, plus the car/home adapters, and a linking cable.

psp will replace your ipod, portable video player, photo player, gps system, and wifi device. oh and it plays games also.
check out the forums below for it's capabilities. -

I think most people are dazzled by sweet graphics. The opportunity to have the same graphics as a PS2 on a handheld device of manageable size (not one of those PSOnes with the attached controller that weighs like 6 pounds some guy built) is very attractive to consumers. I realize gameplay is a big part of what stays and what disappears, but initially, it's all about flash and options. Right now, I think PSP has the best flash and options (uses). Let's just see how it does with games that entertain and not just look pretty.
-
I agree that PSP will probably be the more popular unit, but again, they always place a high cost on their items. Nintendo has always stated this, and Atari & Neo-Geo found out the hard way. (plus Atari & Neo-Geo didn't have enough good games to keep popularity either)

Like I said, Sony can sell on name. They have all the gadgets and gizmo's, but so do all the newest phones coming out. The last thing I need is a new gizmo with a calendar function that I won't use!

Both systems are going after different markets. PSP is going after the PS2 people to buy it. As for Nintendo they have a big fan base people will always buy a Nintendo system just to get there games.
PSP you can record movies on a memory stick. On the PC you have to encode to DIVX or XVID then encode again to the PSP format. MAC there is a program that does it right to the PSP format or does DIVX or XVID format in one Click then encode to PSP format.
Remember the PS2 DVD recorder that never came out, well is coming out I saw it on www.G4TV.com it will also record on small disc so you can watch TV shows on your PSP.
PSP
GOOD as the same power as a PS2
Bad games battery will only last four hours movie will last two hours before the battery dies out.
DS
Good new games will play different with TV screens.
Battery is about 12 hours long.
It has voice recognition
Bad seems to have the same power or maybe a bit more then the N64.
What do I say what one should get. "Look at the games you want to play"!
Then buy that system.. -
Hello,
Don't forget - the DS can play GAMEBOY ADVANCE games too
KevinDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Hello,
So is anyone preordering the PSP??? Anyone standing in line overnight for it?????
I don't think I'd pay over $150 for a portable - even if it plays movies......

i heard that DS lets you chat, but not so far distance wise, however i dont know if DS plays MP3, Movies, or if it can hold files. plus the whole 2 screens thing kinda turns me OFF. i also never liked this flip thingy that nintendo is doing with their handhelds (GBA SP, DS). so i think i like the PSP more, plus it looks freakin COOL
Wow! You got shocks, pegs... LUCKY! -
I'm sure it looked better in the theatre or on a nice high def TV that's bigger than 4 inches.
-
I like the GBA style of games. More old school. So I'd go with a Nintendo DS.
Its been really slow for titles for it though, but you have the entire GBA list of games and there are some REALLY GOOD ONES out there.
