Two questions for Americans

I was having a conversation with a friend and these two questions arose:

1) Can you give any mail that you want sent to your mailman instead of going to a mail box?

2) Is undergraduate studies a farce in the US, like pre-med/pre-law and what does that exactly mean?

1) Yes.

2) Not at all. They're undergrad courses that are required for entry into med school or law school

1 - sort of. You're really supposed to use a mailbox or go to the post office for large packages. Though they have just started door pickup services through www.usps.com

2 - don't quite know what you're getting at. I was in business so I can't comment on that.

I know for law in Australia that you do a 4 year Bachelor course and then like the bar course.

Pre-med involves courses heavily into chemistry and biology. Not sure what pre-law involves, but, yes, they lead to a Bachelor's degree - a prerequisite for entry into med school or law school ....which end up awarding an MD or a JD degree, depending on which one.

MD = Masters Degree I am guessing but what is JD?

Can you do any Bachelor degree program as a prerequisite degree to get in or does it have to relate in some way to the later subject, like in Legally Blonde she does Bachelor of Fashion then goes to Law school?

That's changed then. USed to be you had to have a minimum number of undergrad courses in Chem and Bio.

Nope, never heard of them till I visited the US. I've seen their menu from a friend who went to America as a teacher and the food on their is nothing like real Australian food.

That's changed then. USed to be you had to have a minimum number of undergrad courses in Chem and Bio.

Correct.But as long as u take those classes it doesnt matter what your major is.

Not necessarily...you could be a music major and if you fit the other criteria(good mcat score, volunteer, clinical experience) you'll get in. Its rare, but I know a couple of cases.

Anyway...I'm a pre-med biology major which means I'm learning the basic concepts of what I'm going to learn in med school later in more detail. When I graduate, I'm gonna have a bachelors degree in biology. There are 2 choices at my school, BA in science or BA in arts. You take the same amount of science courses, but in science, you have to do a year of research and in arts, it requires you to take broad courses(spanish, etc.). I hear that med schools and dental schools prefer BA becuase you turn out "well rounded" which is what theyre looking for.

Before I joined the military I was pre-law at Michigan as well. It is a hard school, like Dr. Gee says. My major was political science, with minors in English and French.

JD is a juris doctorate. Technically, a lawyer is considered a doctor. There is absolutely no specific undergraduate requirement to go to law school, you just have to have an undergrad degree of some kind. Pre-law just focuses on English and howevever many actual legal courses the college has. Its just meant to give you a headstart when you later go to law school. Its a pretty useless degree, IMO, because you will learn it all and more in law school and if you change your mind after college and don't want to do law then you've got no use for your degree.

If you are planning to go to law school you still have to be careful about your undergrad degree. Generally, the best degree to have is one in English or Journalism, since you do more writing as a lawyer then anything else, but if you want to do something like Patent law then you are required to have a scientific undergrad degree of some kind.

Actually, NO (See Yoda's response) - you could give some mail to a mail CARRIER (you'll get smacked for calling them mailmen in America nowadays - female's don't appreciate being called a mailman)

Even though you can give mail to a mail carrier, they don't like it when you make a habit of it.

I don't put any mail in my mailbox, to go out. There were teenagers that were stealing mail out of boxes years ago and it caused a lot of problems. So I just drop it off with the MailRoom here at work. As long as it's stamped, they don't care.

Pre-schooling is mandatory in certain fields or to go to certain schools. usually much harder and more information than the actual studies of what they are going into. I wouldn't call it a farce because it's material is some of the highest rated in the world. As for the students using all of it, it depends on what they are going to lead their major to in that field. In short it's heavy study of basics and allows a person to determine wether that's what they really want to do or not.

Actually, according to the DMM, (Domestic Mail Manual), the mail carrier is able to pick up anything you could mail at the post office, provided you have the correct postage and forms. You can even mail insured express mail through your carrier, although they probably won't know what to do. I did a little stint at the post office for 8 months. It's absolutely amazing that more mail doesn't get lost, with their dinosaur systems.
