  1. Has anyone used the Maxent MX-RS215 recorder? Any feedback would be appreciated. I think it's made by Sampo.

I'm really just looking to use it for DV recording from my camcorder and for taping TV shows. I know it's only DVD+R/RW which I think is no issue for my needs.

    Thanks

EDIT: I found a review on this model at another forum www.area450.com and it seems to be a good recorder for what I need. Lacks versatility for -R DVDs burned on PC, but I really don't plan to use it for that. My main concern is that the design does NOT have a cooling fan. On one hand - good! I don't have to worry about fan noise. On the other hand, will it fry the unit in time? Any ideas?

  2. I'm bumbing this up because I think others might want to see the Tiger Direct price (w/rebate) before they sell out. I just ordered one so I'll let folks know if it's any good after Santa brings it on Xmas.

It' IS made by Sampo, btw.

  3. Well, I promised to let folks know if this recorder works OK after Santa brought it last week. So far, so good! I've recorded several TV shows and they look great. I used the 2hr mode for this - I'll try lower quality soon to test where I notice the difference. It has 3hr which should be fine.

I produced a DVD+r (HP media) a DVD+RW (Imation media) on my computer and both played fine in the Maxent.

    Rented DVDs played great.

So far, no compatability problems. I couldn't be happier overall. However, my biggest fear when Santa bought this was that it does not have a cooling fan. This is GREAT now as it makes for a very quiet player. However, I can't help but wonder if this will create problems down the road. I've always found cooling to be a big factor in the life of my other electronic devices. Maybe (hopefully) this Maxent product is well designed so as to not need additional cooling - I guess I'll find this out down the road.

Not sure if it's still cheap at Tiger or elsewhere, but if so I recommend you give it a look.

  4. The offer ended on 31/12/04 - it's back to $180. Well done on securing the bargain

I live near Tiger, I am not a huge fan of them. At least you got your DISC, I guess they had ran out of packing for shipping those DVD's.

Still this DVD Recorder has promise, but without a cooling fan it my fry in a year or less.

    Liteon
    Funia
Are the cheapest out there for DVD Recorders, Liteon has way to much problems. Sticking with the PC for recording I don't have all these type of problems.

Still the fact to replace the common VCR for Digital Media is a fun idea. But how long do we have to wait until they get it right?

  8. Sampo recorders all run hot - they stuck a fan in with the first model, the DV-R1, but it was like a helicopter taking off : mind you it was a silly shape. Denver, who OEM their DVR150 recorder from Sampo (model DV-R88ATN - see also Coby DVDR1100) even issue an FAQ which acknowledges the recorder runs hot, and that it is normal operation - just ensure it is properly ventilated !

They have stuck a fan in their new HDD/DVD recorder too (not available in the US yet, only Europe under Medion branding), but apparently that is quite noisy too.
