You actually like the Galactica remake? I turned it off when "Starbuck" decided to get naked. Worst show I've ever seen, and I;ve suffered thru eps of "Babylon 5" and "Buffy". Even remembering it now makes me sick.

Show Us Your Menus!

I thought you'd never ask. This is the current project I'm working on. Its a documentary of a trip we took to Ukraine for an organization called Hope Now. The menus were created using 3D Studio Max, Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere, and a few dozen freeware apps.

Where do you find time to do menus? With 300 Gig of video files on the computer, 37 hours on the DVD recorder, 23 DVD-RWs and 25 DVD-RAM to author, there isn't the time, which is why I stick to the simple stuff in TDA. The vast majority of people I end up doing DVD-Rs for only want to watch the movie/TV show. They don't care about the work you put into menus at all which is why "no menu" gets selected a lot in my household when authoring discs...

I think nice looking menus are a huge part of an enjoyable DVD. Maybe I'm just so proud of my finished product, but after I create what I think is a nice menu, I sometimes will just watch the menu and navigate for a while It's the same argument people will make for or against DVD inserts / disk art. I personally want not only a great quality movie (in terms of picture / audio), but I want a great presentation. That includes chapter points, menus, artowrk, and the works. Then again, I'm not really making DVD-Rs for other people.. they're primarily for my own enjoyment.

Well put. My philosophy exactly. Finishing touches: That's what makes it such an enjoyable hobby. I guess it's like tying the perfect fly, whittling just the right expression into a statuette, or getting your car's engine to hum and roar musically while its paint job gleams in the sun proudly.

Ok I pulled out a couple more of my past projects. These are examples of what I call, Virtual Resume's. They give all of your resume info via an interactive presentation. The disks autoplay on your pc so they are foolproof. The first one is mine which did land me a job in a law firm (he specifically said it was what got me the interview) and the second one is one I did for a friend in Med School. I have to admit that the main menu pictures were taken from pc games but were highly edited, and all the other menu's and features are custom made. (Yes I got permission to use the graphics.)

I really like your motion menus p_l, very clean. They have given me some new ideas.

Here is another one. This is the first menu I can remember making. I was converting the DVD10 of Goodfellas to DVD5 and realized I was going to have to reauthor anyway. Since the menu's on the DVD are easily the worst I've ever seen, I figured it would be better to just make my own.

I'm really impressed with the menus posted so far! Adam, your's are stunning!

Here are two motion menus from a DVD I've just made to accompany a music video (which my friends and I also made) for a local punk rock band, Stitched Up.

The entire DVD took me about 6 weeks to create and complete (there's a hell of a lot of stuff on there!). I used Paint Shop Pro 7 and Vegas 5.0 to create all the menus.

I'd love to join in the party here, of menu making
But, my only problems with making menus is *not* that I can't or don't know how,
but rather, because there aren't any freeware apps that allows this
under windows 98 gold
And, because I'm under win98 gold, I can't use those that might come close to
freeware.. for instance, TDA require's w98SE at minimum. Anyways.

The only problem I have w/ low-res menu pics is that they tend to throw off
my interests because they are too blury to enjoy or appreciate
I hate scrolling left/right w/ long pics too. But, maybe if a better
resizing was used in the pics that are U/L'ed might help.
But, 720 x 480 is fine with me. If I max'ize my window, its fine

Also, I can't appreciate your sample, becuase you're usign a codec that I don't
have (nor want to install - too many problems) *.wmv give my OS big headackes
though divX doesn't (as much)

I'll just watch by the sidelines for now

If anyone's wondering how to rip and encode your menu to put up here, here's how I do it: In DVD Shrink's Reauthor mode, select the menu only and hit Backup!, and save to a VIDEO_TS folder. Open that in TMPGEnc Xpress using the Source Wizard and encode to WMV format, tweaking the settings to make a 1.85MB file for upload to this site.

If you have another method, please share it here, too.
