fitted new cdrw on laptop get ide # error

i just bought a new cdrw for my laptop after the old one packed up but on boot up i get an ide # error messege and drive is not seen in bios

the old writer was set as master on secondry ide cable same as this one i know the new cdrw works because i got an ide to laptop converter cable and banged it in my desktop pc and it was regonised straight away and worked fine

dont know a lot about laptops but when i go into bios i carnt put the cdrom on auto detect either every other setting i can change bar this one has anyone any ideas please its driving me mad i been searching for last 3 nights tryin to find out what problem could be

Did you try doing a bios update on your laptop?

the bios has not got a newer version available its a toshiba laptop 2 years old

from what i have read some toshiba laptops are unable to pick up cable select cdrw drives so i downloaded a utility from lite on and flashed the new drive to master in desktop then put in lappy still got ide error tried again flashed to slave put in lappy still same problem
