  1. Ave,

I have a few TV Rip AVI's which have a 20 FPS. I wanted to encode them into NTSC so i can author them on DVD. How can i do that?

I tried using TMPGEnc Xpress.. and i do think i have succesfully converted the video into an NTSC 29.970 FPS m2v file.

I tried encoding the Audio using Besweet. Changing framerate from 20 fps to 29.970 fsp only made the audio run real fast and was giving the famous "chipmunk effect".

Is there anyway to do this correctly?

    Thanks,
    Mickey'

Changing 20fps to 29,97fps will increase the audio speed with 50%. You can add filters to reduce the chipmunc effect but it isn't worth it.

Try convert to 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown instead. 20% speed increase....maybe a bit tooooo much.

Or let the encoder add frames, a bit jerky playback then.

How did you get 20fps from a TV rip anyway? Are you sure that it really is 20fps?

  4. anything i need changed i just pop into vegas 5 and encode to whatever file I need. it does a decent job turning a 25 FPS source into a 30, so I'm sure it should manage with whatever you've got.

If you have Avisynth and are comfortable with using it, have a look at this thread over on Doom9 - MVTools. Uses motion estimation to fill in the missing frames. It is not going to be fast, but the results will be in sync audio and non-jerky video. As stated in an earilier post, best would be to upconvert to 23.976 with Avisynth/encoder and then run pulldown prior to authoring. If you do not know anything about Avisynth or are wanting a one stop solution, ignore this post

Hmmm are we sure this is not a PAL source that's been erroneously IVTC'd? It sounds very weird that a TV broadcast would be 20f/s

The point is that going 25f/s->29.97f/s you're actually changing the playback rate by about 4% (25->23.976+pulldown), whereas 20f/s to whatever "standard" framerate is a really big change.

If this is really a 20F/s source "maybe" you'd be better off duplicating frames instead of speeding up the footage.
