  1. I got this 960x528 xvid avi file, it has ac3 audio included, I would like to get this file in a format which works for DVD so I can burn it on one and play it at a standalone dvd player.

Now I've alrdy tried almost all guides on this site, but I just can't seem to get it as sharp as the original. I think its because no program allows me to convert without altering the resolution...but I dunno for sure, anyone has a suggestion ?

As you're going to watch it on TV, I don't think you're going to see any difference, provided you can use enough high bitrate. You might see some loss i detail on a monitor, but then, there's no need to do a DVD if you're going to watch it on the computer...
To be authored as DVD, it has to be resized to 720*480 (NTSC). I use Lanzcos resize filter (VirtualDub/AviSynth) which I think gives the best result.

Well actually it can also be 704x480 or half d1 352x480. But since it's so much larger it would be a good target size to use standard full d1 720x480 as mats suggested.

  5. actually, when I convert it using NTSC standards I get a stuttering. It's only when I pick PAL that I get a nice smooth file after conversion.

As for bitrate, even if I set it on 8000 it's not nearly as sharp as the original...which is only 2100ish according to gspot

  6. Maybe it was Pal to begin with, and in that case it's a different frame rate, and thats why it works out for you.

AVI bitrate (regardless of codec) and mpeg bitrate is totally unrelated. What do you use to encode to DVD mpeg?

  8. I've been using TMPTEnc Plus 2.5 sofar

I dont want or need anything fancy, just a decent conversion. One where I can't see the choppy sides of straight lines in the movie, just like in the avi file. It has briliant, clear and vibrant colors very nice sharp edges...exactly the kind of stuff you want on a dvd..

As for the NTSC - PAL stuff...I really don't care eitherway, think it will both play anyways.
