  1. I installed linux on my machine the other day - not for any particular reason, I just thought the machine has been running fine for a while now and it was about time that I did something to mess it up so I thought I'll dual boot XP and Linux, trouble is its bloody worked.

So I now have Linux up and running and I wouldn't mind some good software to run on it - any suggestions for any video encoding stuff ?

  2. Why not try asking in the Linux forum

Would you like your topic to be moved there (remember, no cross posting!)

There's a long list of video applications for linux. Since you said "video encoding", I'll list a few from capture and encoding. It would help to know what linux distro you're running.

    gv4l -capture
    streamer
    ffmpeg
    avicap
    bttvgrab
    mencoder
    xawtv
    mp4creator
    lives
    kino
    cinelerra
    mythtv

I also downloaded a live cd for dyne:bolic linux. This distro shows some great video related apps. I would not use this as my normal distro, but from a live cd, it's a great way to see some of the apps. I also recently find a site that lists all video related apps alphabetically with descriptions. I'll see if I can find the url again.

  4. Cheers tekkie - I think its RUSE 9.1, I'm looking to use this as a Video Capturing and converting machine.

Could it be SuSE 9.1? That's pretty popular. There are definately apps available. First thing I set mine up to do (after DVD backups ) was capturing from a bt878 base card. Still haven't decided what I'm going to use for content editing yet.

There are several people in the linux forum who have been very helpful getting things started. Yes, there is a linux forum here!

When you're ready to do your backups, let me know. I have some good examples of ways to do it. Or you could ask the other linux users here who can give you decent advice.

  8. I can help you get setup too! I'm glad to help. I would recommend a couple more apps besides what tekkieman recommended:
avidemux ** very good like virtual dub but encodes to mpeg.
    transcode
    dvd:rip
wine (you can run windows apps in linux through wine)
    qdvd author
    dvd styler
    cinelerra
    lve
    LiVES
    Audacity
    Mplayer
I'm currently not doing too much video-related stuff with linux, I'm mainly working on system adminstration for now. I would like to get more into video-editing. Maybe we can all work together to develop a good system of software. What desktop environment are you using? I'm using KDE. Also for reference I'm using Slackware with the 2.4 kernel (its a different distro than what your running). A good site for more info too is www.linuxquestions.org , I'm registered as Garibaldi3489 on there as well. I'm glad to answer any questions that you might have.

A guy at my work place who bought a Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but couldn't return it for a refund because he has opened the box. I then grabed it from him for $10. The 9 CDs are still sealed and I'll open them when I get home. I just want to give you guys the Linux experts here a heads up warning that I'll slam you with tons of questions, maybe not that many

Please use a better post topic.
    "Linux" is insufficient and unacceptable.
    Thanks.
