  1. I have a series of 4 xvid files- files 1, 3, and 4 converted no prob with xilisoft (they were all encoded by the same source).

however, file 2 'converts' after 2-3 seconds as only a 30k file (no matter what format I choose)

I tried TMPENC but after about 2 hours it crashes as well
I opened it with GSpot, everything seems normal there

    I'm stumped

  4. used vdub to save a wav file- then tried ac3fix- nothing happened

  5. ok, got ac3fix running (the gui simply doesnt work at all, waste of time there), and it has been runnng for 5 minutes, currently on frame 1500, says every frame has 30-60k or 'current wrongness' whatever that means

tried opening the file with virtualdubmod- gives me a warning of '
improper VBR encoding in the source avi file (audio stream 1) and asks to re-write the file? I can't figure out how to save the audio in vdubmod, there is no audio menu like in vdub

you didnt check for bad frames and it sounds like it is a mp3 file , not a ac3 file ... and you are wasting your time using ac3fix to to fix a mp3 file ...

check for bad frames (see the many guides)

  7. computer froze trying to check for bad frames... sigh this is just impossible to figure out

I skipped ahead to files 4-5-6 to make a dvd, tmpeg dvd crashes with an error that there is an 'illegal ac3 codec' ?

I've tried half a dozen different programs so far, no dice

I had the same type of avi that would crash tmpgenc and virtualdub, what i did was run the avi thru divxfix and and had cut out bad parts checked, after it was finished the file wont play in wmp but you can load it in virtualdub and frameserve it to tmpgenc.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

maybe the file is corrupted. You may need to cut your losses.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Can you re-obtain the source file ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  14. re-obtained the source file- tmpgenec crashes at about 50%- invalid pointer operation

  15. Try installing ffdshow. I've hd xvids that don't work with the official codec and ones that don't work with ffdshow but between them managed to cover most.

Also if you haven't already done so make sure you have the latest version of xvid.

I've also had to pass some files through vdub and create a new avi that can then be re-encoded some times.

Good luck but sometime these file are damaged beyond fixing. Especially if they have been downloaded

  16. maybe a miracle here- when tmpgenc crashed again after a few hours (I separated the audio track with Goldwave following the guide posted here), it started right up again from the first frame! It still showed 50% in the status bar, but did the entire file again.

Now it outputted a file in the correct size but in unknow format, but would't go to 'finished/stop' status (clock just kept going at 100%)

I re-named the file with a .mpg extension since it wouldn't open in media players, and am trying to output a dvd using that file right now:
if this works, I will redo the DVD with menus, etc. ,, once the file is confirmed

    cross your fingers
