I have about 30 avi's which I just finished converting to 30 mpg with tmpgenc (about 13 hrs viewing time). I want to put them all on a span of 3 cd's and have them play at a steady volume but some clips are way louder than others. (I did not realize this would be so before converting.)
I did another batch of files in the past (90 files) and did this:
demuxed the mpg to get mp2
converted mp2 to mp3
loaded all the mp3 into MP3Gain and made them all the same volume
converted the mp3 to wav
re-encoded the wav back to mp2
remuxed the mpg
As you can see, this was a royal pain in the ass and took forever. (I did it for 90 45-min clips.)
Is there a simpler way?
I'd really rather not re-encode all the clips sound since i'd be going from mp2 to mp2 (I've done edits to the clips so using the original would screw up sinc) but I will if i must. Can anyone recommend a fast and easy way to do the 30 files?
Also, is there a way I can set up tmpgenc sound so that all my future clips will have the same volume level *regardless* of the source volume?
Thanks
Edit: Woops, forgot that I got MP3Gain elsewhere. Here's the link if anyone's interested.

Why are you converting mp2 to mp3? That is another compression step that you don't need and most certainly degrades quality. The only way to do it properly is to convert the mp2 to a non compressed wave, normalize it, then re-encode it.
Unless I am not understanding what you are doing here. Can MP3Gain perform lossless audio normalzing on an mp2 file? Is this what you are doing?
How do you plan on putting 13 hours of video on 3 CDs? You don't state what video format but I can gather that you have VCD mpeg1 or SVCD mpeg2 video. -
Why am I converting mp2 to mp3? Because mp3 is the only format MP3Gain will accept.
Why don't I just normalize the wav? This is where it gets tricky.
Lets say I had 2 clips, one with lots of explosions and gunfire and one with 2 people talking in a crowded restaurant. I want to put these both on the same cd and not have to hit the volume button between movies. I don't want the people talking clip to sound as loud as the explosions clip, I want it to sound like its part of the same movie. How would I know what percentage to normalize each wav relative to eachother?
If you check out the MP3Gain site it explains it better in the faq page.

(Yes I am using VCD mpeg-1. I usually squeeze an ungodly amount of time out of a VCD and have posted how on previous threads. I'm thinking of writing a guide but still working out some kinks.)
