And...........The audio TS folder is part of the original DVD specification and included to meet that spec. Never really implemented for audio. There are lots of DVDs that don't even include them. As Baldrick said, the audio is in the VOBs, muxed (mixed in) with the video.

DVD Audio is 24 bit / 192kHz in stereo and 24 bit / 96 kHz in 5.1 surround.
Only a few high end dvd players are capable of playing DVD Audio and on a pc, those with Soundblaster Audigy 2 series of sound card can take advantage of the format. -
I should have said 'mostly never really implemented'.
I've just never seen anything in it. Guess I've never ran into a DVD AUDIO file.

It also implements several copy protections that is so far UNCRACKED and may probably remain so. it uses a 128 bit encyption, as well as CPRM Protection. No such software exists yet that can copy DVD Audio. -

Reading through some DVD reference materials the other day and it finally dawned on me...
DVD players are meant to parse a disc in a particular order. It looks for these "Zones" or folders (in this order)
1. Audio Zone (AUDIO_TS)
2. Video Zone (VIDEO_TS)
3. Other Zone (JACKET_P, and anything else)
Therefore, even if the disc is standard DVD-Video only (meaning contains no DVD-Audio spec material), it makes sense to leave the AUDIO_TS folder in so that the player will follow the normal order of parsing (which for most players is to ignore the AUDIO_TS).
Also, this makes sense when you DO have DVD-Audio material, because the specs require the player to give 1st play priority to the Audio material OVER the Video material (there's that parsing order thing again).
