  1. I've been looking for a program to edit the VOB files from my DVD recorder. So far the only program I've found that does what I want is TMPGenc Xpress 3. This has ' select source' mode which takes all the files from my Philips DVD recorder and encodes them to MPEG2, which is what I want. The trouble is, they say the full version requires online activation, and my editing machine does not have a net connection. Are there any other versions of TMPenc which don't require activation? Thanks

The older version of TMPGENC, known as TMPGENC PLUS 2.5.x are all activation-free (at least they were in the past, not 100% positive these days). I use this. Or you can buy somebody else's encoders, like Procoder, Mainconcept, CCE.

  7. I don't think TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 accepts VOBs. But I could be wrong.

Then demux with TMPGENC in MPEG tools to M2V and audio, then remux only those portions (strip non a/v info, reason you cannot just rename files).

It accepts vob, but not the audio. At least for the vob I tried. It would encode the video.

Too late. A terminator has been dispatched to your location. You will not last the night. By the way, after he scores and whacks your butt, may I have your watch? It looks really nice, and you won't be needing it any more...

  12. The best way of getting TmpGenc 2.5 to accept VOBS (IMHO) is to use dvd2avi to frameserve to it. There are guides on doing this somewhere on this site if you take a look around.

Amazing. I don't think I ever so many "off with his head" before in my life. Anyway, if your trial version of TMPGenc expires, you can still load MPEG-2s and MPEG-1s in it, but you cannot save to MPEG-2s. The plugin is called:
TMPGEnc_MPEG2_Plugin, (what are the odds of that happening?), and is available in the Tools section at left.
By changing the VOB extension to .mpg, most VOBs can be loaded, but is not a given.

You gurus should be ashamed of yourselves.

    Is telephone activation not possible.

I know that some software that require activations allow activations over the phone for those without a net connection.

Careful. The TMPGEnc website states they do not permit redistribution of any version, especially of versions 12x. I suppose if you DO have it on your HD, it's legal? Or is it? (TMPGEnc site also says use older versions at your own risk.)

Pegasys people, the authors of TMPGEnc, are funny. TMPGEnc started as a freeware, the started charging money only because the were forced to pay royalties to MPG2 organization -- ended up with most severe online validation. Nowadays TMPGEnc plus is not sold anymore, they have only the freeware version available, where MPG2 encoding expires after a time limit. They wanting to keep cash flow to continue exist as a company is understood, what I fail to understand is why the stopped selling TMPGEnc 2.5 plus.

    you.

You can download a TMPGenc version v2.521.58.169 here:
Though, its from Pegasiss, ( the ones that R charging ) the webpage says
    it's Freeware but I can't garentee the MPEG-2 though it doens't say
    trial-ware or anything

    * http://216.239.37.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.pc-facile.com/TMPGEnc_freeware_s1...26as_qdr%3Dall

Please try and see if that works out ok for you w/ mpeg-2 support or not. I don't know

Freeware versions can be downloaded from Pegasys website as well. Freeware versions, wherever they are downloaded from, MPG2 encoding is time limited.

Which is unrealiable at best, at least in my experience. That is why I reccomend using DVD2AVI to frameserve as it works everytime (for me).

on the note of dvd2avi ...

My experience with this app was like this. As long as you *did not*
choose the Force Film option, you would always have a perfect
source to IVTC (as long as you knew w/out a *shadow* of a doubt, that
it was infact true Film throughout) process. Anyways.

My version of TMPG ( v2.520 ) opens VOB files w/out any problems. I use the
MEPG-Tools area to de-mux the video/audio into *.m2v and *.Mp2 file for (and
is the best approach for re-compressing)

But, if you don't have space, then the dvd2avi is the best alternative, and
I too have never had a problem (though I continue to recommend you use it
    w/out the Force Film feature)

tmpgenc 12a was freeware, if released under the freeware license doesn't that give "anyone" the right to use it and re-distribute it, plus even request the source code ???

No. You're thinking about "free software", not "freeware".
