With all the problems I have in making menus that work on all DVD software players I have one question.
If (using nero 5.5) I don't use its menu making command can the I random access the multiple videos I have on the VCD using the software's keypad.
Or will I be only able to view these videos in the order that they have been burned onto the disk.
Or, to put it another way, All I want is know is that with-out menus can I (for example) press 2 on the keypad and get video 2. and then press 4 for video 4, then press 1 for video 1 and so on.

I've never tried nero but with all the software I have tried this is what happens:
If I make a VCD without a menu the VCD will start playing and play one mpg after another without stopping. Pressing the chapter advance putton will jump from one chapter to the next. The number buttons do not function.
If I do make a menu the VCD opens to the menu page and I have to press Play or pick a chapter with the number buttons. If I press chapter advance button it goes to the menu and then you have to pick a chapter with the number button.
I'm trying to find a program that will let me make menus and use the chapter advance to jump to the next chapter without haveing to go to the menu. -
Thank you
Finally someone who gave me an answer other then "people like menus."
I hope you find what you are looking for, but, in my experence the problems with menus seem lie in the players more then the VCD makers.
For example using NERO:
With WinDVD no problem
With PowerDVD the menu only appears for 5 seconds then starts playing the video (or the last video if there is more then 1 on the disk) automatically.
On SONY computers Nothing
Using Ulead Movie Maker:
With WinDVD no problem
With PowerDVD the menu will only stay as long as the length of the backround music - then same as above.
On DVD players? So far with JVC, Samsung, and 1 sony - no problem
In conclusinon: Making menus is a crap shoot. -

VCDImager can do this. It's just a matter of setting certain PBC parameters correctly (ie, the next function points to the next track rather than the menu).
